All XIIs from 88-2003 are identical other than color however the 86 and many of the 87 year models did have issues with an igniter modual that advanced the spark to much and snap the starter chain. Fixable by just replacing it.

I believe the 86 and 87 also did not have the option of cruse control and a CB like the later bikes had.

First year models also didn't have the rear speakers and had smaller diameter front forks.

Some parts in the clutch assemblies were about the only changes from 88-03. Seems like transmission issues, which are rare, are seen more in the '01,02 & 03 models as the machined tolerances opened up due to wear during manufacturing.

Basically, pick a color and ride.

Yes, what may seem like low mileage could be over 100,000 on the OD but don't let that stop you if it looks and runs good you will get many more years out of it.
