Handlebar hand grips removal / install
Ok, so I've ordered new handle bar grips for my '86 Voyager ZG1200. I've never done this before on a twist throttle. I am wondering how difficult this is to do? I'm sure it easier than I'm thinking, but I don't want to mess this up lol.
So any help on this topic would be great!

These are the best grips I've ever used. Only $6 to! The easily slip over the oem grips. Install in a few minutes
Very soft, very solid, and secure.
Have Had mine for several years now and they still work great

Those are nice, but this is what I bought. They don't slip over the existing grips, but they replace them altogether.

Re: Handlebar hand grips removal / install
If you don't know how to remove the old grips, get a box cutter and slice the grips along their axis. peel them off, remove any adhesive with something like Goo Gone. The new grips should have come with a tube of new adhesive. put just a little on the handlebar and the throttle tube and quickly push the new grips on. You may have to twist back and forth to get them all the way on so don't use too much adhesive. Once in place give them an hour to set and you are done. BTW, the grips you bought will require you to remove the bar ends. The purpose of the bar end weights are to reduce vibration. If you still want to use them you will have to remove the ends of the new grips. Remove the bar ends first then replace. The bar ends have a locktite on the screws. I have used a propane torch to heat the ends and use a phillips screw driver that matches the screw to remove it. Works very well.

Re: Handlebar hand grips removal / install
I am actually more concerned with putting on the twist throttle side. Especially with the two throttle cables. Is there anything special I will need to do to get that off and also to install in the new grip?

Re: Handlebar hand grips removal / install
You don't need to remove the throttle tube from the right switch housing or unhook the throttle cables. Just remove the bar ends, remove the old grips, either by cutting or pulling them off ( I've had good luck with shooting a little WD40 down underneath the grip from both ends. They'll usually slide right off). Cut a hole in the end of the grip, apply a little more WD40 inside the leading end of it and push on. I don't like using adhesive. Never had a problem. Good luck!

If you don't like using an adhesive on the throttle tube, instead of WD40 use a very small amount of Dawn dishwashing detergent on the inside of the new grip and slide it on. When the detergent dries the grip wont slip.

Have you ever replaced a throttle on any machine, if you have replaced one you can replace any.Draxxis wrote:Those are nice, but this is what I bought. They don't slip over the existing grips, but they replace them altogether.

give yourself as much cable slack from any or all cable ends , and take the cable end out of the hole with the wire slot.
If you want take the allen head bolt out of that side and get rid of that part of the 3peice handle bars first. It will be easy to then slide the bar out of the Throttle tube. and just rest it with the brake still attached on a towel or heavy shop rag. Now you just have the throttle grip/cable control, in your hand, without fighting the cables to remove the throttle tube with that end of the bar attached (those cables are not that long) . Be aware you may need to get to the top of the carbs to loosen the slack enough.
Your biggest concern is getting enough slack in the cable to get one cable end off first.
Be advised that when your done; you give yourself the proper Free Play/ or the cancel switch on the carb rack can be envoked to cancel cruise/control at that point.
If it where me, I'd pull the right side of the cowl, and adjust the cruise control free play at the same time.
If you don't feel confident , just sayin , a stuck cable wide open throttle condition can surprise you....Just like that game show that says
would you like to call a friend ?
With the right tools , and never doing it before, your looking at a half day.
the left side ? cut it off with a razor knife , apply whatever glue you decide and slide it on Quickly before the glue starts to set. Wait for whatever time the adhesive glue directions call for...
Nice pricey new grips. I just went with 9 dollar foam grips on mine. Stopped the numbness I got after about 2 hours on the road. And it was a 15 minute job.

been doing the dish soap trick on handlebar grip since way back in grade school on my bike bars. Works like a charm.Mr Jensee wrote:If you don't like using an adhesive on the throttle tube, instead of WD40 use a very small amount of Dawn dishwashing detergent on the inside of the new grip and slide it on. Gene, I'm assuming this is the same idea you had in mind when you asked me if I had used soap to install that visor tint strip.

Sort of , but a day of riding in the heavy rain will re-hydrate the soap, It all boils down too, whats the application and the material . The rain we have no control of....krasmu wrote:been doing the dish soap trick on handlebar grip since way back in grade school on my bike bars. PS. almost lost the visor tint strip I bought at the rally.
