monkey with air box for high elevation?

Post by GlockPointer »

I will be cruising up to Monarch Pass Co. next week, God willing.

Would it be beneficial at some point to prop the air box open to let it breath at altitude?

I'll be going from about 800ft above sea level in Lakeway Tx. up to 11000+ ft in Co.

I'm going to try to drink a six pack at the pass, then try to make it to Colorado Springs or wherever I fall over. :corn:

I have never needed to do anything for alt/elevation adjustment. We live just 63 feet above sea level and have traveled many a mountain pass.

I was just in Colorado last summer and did part of the Pikes Peak road (had to turn around about 3/4 of the way up due to bad weather at the top) we were at about 12,000ft at the point of turning around and had no issues with my XII.

The Voyager has CV (constant velocity) carbs on it. It can self adjust for altitude changes. No need for modifications. Just keep a clean air filter and you are good for any altitude.

Just rode Bear Tooth Highway at Red Lodge MT. My 2002 Voyager ran just fine, pulling trailer, all the way to summit with no mods.

Oh Man,
I gotta get some sleep, on another board, bunch of guys yammering on about ripping a belly from a goat. Isn't that against the law?

Then I came here and I imagined a primate with an air cleaner running around in the mountains......

Oh yeah, I remembered what I was gonna say, our 2009 VV1700 trike ran just fine at all altitudes from 250 ft below sea level, to over 10,000 ft above last month on our two rides, Hurley and Tour Of California, we were as high Yosemite in the sierras, and as low as the Salton Sea, out in the desert. Another guy on a Harley didn't fair as well. It was a lot cooler at Yosemite!

I just had to add some pics.....
Been there done that, Left Red Lodge at 8 am in a tee-shirt and when I hit the summit of Bear tooth pass I could not get my leathers on quick enough. Man was it cold. Bike had only 4,000 on the odometer then, ran like a fine watch, all it asked for was gas. Since then I have never worried about going from sea level to up over the clouds ever... 86,000 on it now, starts up,sounds, runs, and idles the same as it has always has. Most dependable bike I have ever owned. Never have had the carb's off or made any changes to the intake or exhaust. I do however drain the carb/bowls a few times a year. And one would be surprised at what will go thru the fuel filter...
Have a safe trip..
Gene Kap.
