Horn blaring non-stop & headlight not working
I went for a ride today and on my way back home the horn started honking non=stop. I took the tank cover off and unplugged one of the horn connectors. The horn did stop. I thought all was well for the moment. I later realized that the headlight was not on at all. The turn signals work, radio works, hazards work, brake lights work. Any recommendation? Your assistance is greatly appreciated!!!

Were you in the rain and got Water in the handlebar controls? Try running some electrical contact cleaner through them.

You nailed it!!! Thank you . I never leave the bike outside. It did get rained on the night before and actually I had to ride in the rain on the way back home but that was after the problem occurred.

It's a sign that the grease in the controls has been cleaned away and now water is taking over. You can take apart and add more non conducting grease to the contacts and that will stop it from happening. Just be careful as there are lots of small parts in there that can get lost.

Pick up a tube of di-electric grease at an auto parts store. coat the contacts and bare metal inside your controls. I use it for every electrical connection I can get to as well.

Re: Horn blaring non-stop & headlight not working
Tony, You helped me previously with wire harness issue on my 2002. I sold that one and got a 1999. Well last night I my headlight went out (I was able to get to turn back on) and today my wife told me that I did not have any brake lights when she was following me. I stopped and wiggled the wire harness at the bend by the forks and the bike died. I was 150 miles from home. I was able to get it started and home. Question is where would you guess I start cutting the cover to start pulling the wires. Also would that have caused my horn to go off like it did the other day or is it just coincidental? Thanks in advance.Tonyvdb wrote:Were you in the rain and got Water in the handlebar controls? Try running some electrical contact cleaner through them.

Re: Horn blaring non-stop & headlight not working
Ok, so where to start.
I know others her have had this same problem and from their postings it would seem that it could be the wire or so ply the main connector that all those wires connect too. I would do the simply one firs and pull apart several of the connectors located on the right side (when facing the front of the bike) as water in them or corrosion can cause these issues also.
If that does not help then tackle the individual wires along the steering tree.

Sounds like ignition switch and or ignition switch wiring. Remove ignition switch and wire harness. I would replace it but some have fixed these. Carl probably has good used ones for a decent price.
