How many miles on tires?

Post by metric »

Well, I have on my VoyagerXII rear tires 15000 miles don't looks to bad the front one got only 2000 so is OK. I was wondering how many miles you guys get on your motorcycle tires and how do you check if the tire is still OK and safe to ride on it...

I don't go by miles I go by age of the tire. So I usually have new rubber every spring no matter how many miles are left on it.

I run my E-3s till I see the wear bars are starting to wear down then change them, usually. :gig: This past winter with 22000 miles on my rear,I changed early due to the wear rate would have it needing changed on my trip to Hurly.I projected it would have gone to 24000.My front E-3s only get about 15000-17000. :corn:

I ran on Pirelli MT66 Route tires until recently. Got 12,000 miles out of the rear, have 14,000 on the front, but it needs to be replaced very soon. Recently replaced the rear with a Michelin Commander II, will be putting the same on the front, soon.

I went with the Pirelli's due to their superior wet traction, and the fact that they seemed to ignore tar snakes, and road cracks, until the tread was 2/3 gone. I am willing to pay more for wet traction (lower mileage). We rode the Michelin Commander II rear tire in plenty of rain recently, on the Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia, Canada: 2,100 mile trip. It had great traction on all surfaces, and in all conditions (ran into road construction often: grooved pavement, sand, loose and packed gravel). It should yield many more miles compared to the Pirelli's, so looking forward to getting the front replaced. Cheers!

Right now I have about 8000 miles on a set of Michelin Commander II's and they are showing no signs of bad wear. The wet traction came in quickly it took a few hundred miles to "scuff in". Since then I am very happy and they look to have many miles left in them.

All these mileage numbers far exceed anything I have ever got out of a motorcycle tire. Some very impressive numbers for sure. The most I ever got out of a front tire was an E-3 with 10,000 miles on it. I usually get about the same mileage out of both front and rear until I went with the car tire. It has 12,000 on it and is wearing well so far, have a about 4,000 on a Michelin Commander II on the front end and am very pleased with it's performance both on wet and dry and both slow and high speed riding.

A little something I learned recently and it may have saved my life, it could save yours too...

I was having some handling problems with my bike that I just couldn't seem to get sorted out. I wrenched my way through every item I could think of, steering stem, right side frame bolts, fork brace and a rear tire. In an effort to test stability, I ran her down the highway at 95mph [insert lecture here] at which point my bike went into a violent wobble. I was thinking I was about to die and the fact that got the bike back under control was only through the grace of God and some minor assistance from my 40+ years of riding experience.

I was later at a friends house with my bike and was telling him that I was thinking of selling my beloved Ole Blue because she tried to kill me and I couldn't figure out why. He then rubbed his hand over my front tire and said "John, you have extreme cupping on this tire". I ignored the tire in the past because visually it had plenty of tread. However, I could easily feel what his concerns were when I felt the tire.

Figuring it was worth one more shot before I re-homed her, I granted Blue a reprieve and decided to fit her with new soles on the front. Like magic, she turned her attitude around and rode steady as a rock. Wobbles are gone and so are the death threats.

Your tire wear is so much more than tread depth!!! I will be inspecting my tires much more often now, please do the same with yours!!!

New here, came in from VROC and ride a Nomad. It's a heavier scoot, @100 lbs
per specs, VROC will tell Ya to run 40 / 40 front / back, to prevent just that.
I'll do it on my Voyager 'til I learn different, I'm sure more will chime in, will
follow this and see. Cranky

When I got my bike it had 20,000 miles on the OD. less than a thousand miles later I put on Elite 3 tires because I got tired of the wobble I had with the handlebars. My bike now has 34,000 on it and my same E3 tires sill look good with plenty of tread. Nowhere near the wear indicators yet. As far as pressures I run 35 front and 40 rear without trouble.
