We are drowning here..

Post by Mr Jensee »

It has been raining hard and steady all over Acadiana which includes Lafayette for the last 2 days. I don't know how many of you have facebook but I am posting a video from the local TV station here. No reduction in rain predicted through tomorrow (Sunday). The ten foot deep concrete canal behind my house is full and fast flowing within 18 inches from the top as of this morning. Some parishes have received over 15 inches so far. The city government has said it will cite anyone caught on the roads today. Never in all my years have I heard of this happening. Starting to get a little worried.

Michael we are getting a lot of rain in Elton but so far it is draining off and not backing up. My house is on piers except for a den & utility room so I'm not really in bad shape. Are you concerned with water in your house at this time?

My house is on peers also so my house is safe. However the roads are quickly becoming flooded, since the sewer system is quickly being overwhelmed. They have ordered everyone off the streets here. Never seen that in the Lafayette I have lived in for 56 years. The rain just wont stop and it isn't coming down lightly.

We have the opposite problem here. We have rice farmers who are trying to bring in crops and the rain and wind are a real problem. The rain has finally abated in Elton but they are predicting another round of rain tomorrow. This state needs some time for the water to run off and it doesn't look like it will happen.

11pm Saturday and the rain is still coming down. It stopped for a couple of hours during the day. More rain expected tomorrow, I hope it is less.

Spent most of the day without Direct TV due to the cloud layers. That sucked. I can watch just so much Netflix. :gig:

Mike are you out of the woods yet and into clean up? I have been tracking the weather and it still seems like you are getting some rain. I know how difficult floods can be. :(

Well, did you guys keep your bikes high and dry? I once saw a guy rig up a set of pullies to lift his hot rod above the water using a tall tree. Should be easy to do with a bike!
Hope this isn't out of place here, but I thought this pic was funny!

Thank the Lord that even though I am considered in a flood zone and I have flood insurance, we had absolutely no flooding. There are still subdivisions and trailer parks in this parish under water. Drainage has been slow but it is coming down. I am praying that disturbance in the Caribbean doesn't become a hurricane because this part of the country can't stand anymore flooding. Last spring the central part of the state got it, and now we have experienced it. But I have to say, this old house, up on piers would have some really high water to affect the contents. And so far since we moved in here in 1989 have only once where the water rose up to our back steps. Thanks folks for being concerned.

Michael we had about 10 inches of rain the first two days but the property in Elton is pretty high so it ran off quickly. My house as yours is on piers and I've never had water worries for the main part. I have an attached den and utility room that are on a slab and they are still dry. I'm also watching the disturbance in the Atlantic. The people in the lower part of the state definitely do not need anymore water.

That's why I hesitated to post that, but was hoping it would help lighten things up. Good to hear you two are not 'swimming". Was wondering what accommodations could be made to raise your bikes and cars. Would definitely HATE to see pics of just the windshield of a Voyager! Cars can be replaced easily by insurance, but bikes are just to personalized to take so lightly. Maybe you can build some sort of "handicap" ramp to get your bike up to house level. Or, sink a telephone pole to use to hoist it above water level if the need arises. Poles are cheap.

I have been entertaining purchasing a bike lift like the one Harbor Freight has. That would raise the bike up a good 3 feet if I had flood worries. I mostly would like it for maintenance reasons. Worst comes to worse I could borrow my son in law's ATV ramp and put it in the house. And yes I enjoyed the humor. Heaven knows we all need some. Gator Mike I would love to ride out to your place when the weather is cooler and visit some. As of now it is just too hot and it rains every afternoon. I hate having to ride in the rain.

Know what you mean Michael, I'm thinking of installing windshield wipers on my bike. :-D Hopefully it will start straightening out soon and we can get together for a ride.

Mike I just wish this rain would stop. Every day for half the day it is raining here in Lafayette. I think my bike will rust away before I get to ride it anywhere. I will give you a call before I head your way, I know you have doctor appointments with your wife so it would only be courteous to call ahead of time.
