Many thanks to everyone that post here. I bought a 03 Voyager 8 weeks ago and after reading many many posts I have about got the bike up to snuff. New tires, brakes, fluids, the usual. Since I had access to the post I was able to make better decisions on tires and repairs that I have done. Definitely saving me money. Used the savings to join the AVA. Last thing to fix is an oil leak coming from the front of the drive shaft. Is there a way to check if it has a vent hole without removing rear tire? Hopefully just from pressure buildup from high speeds on interstate. Thanks again, see you in Nashville.

Congradulations on getting all the work done in that short of time. :clap: In answer to finding if the final drive vent is drilled,no you must pull the rear wheel.It can be drilled with the final in place,just don't twist the bit off, like I did ,as the bit was finishing going through the wall. :bat: I then pulled the final separated the cases,drove the broken bit out ,then reassembled everything. :gig:

We always try make it easier for new owners here. We all know what it's like to own a new machine with most of it's assets hidden from view. I hope you stay happy with your 03. I have liked that olive green and silver paint scheme.

You will have to remove the rear tire to see if the hole is drilled. I have a 2001 and have never drilled out the hole and have never had a problem so each to his own.

Welcome to the group ! :woohoo:

Some folks say that the 03' is a undesirable year to get ......... but I have had flawless operation from mine ! I would buy another 03' in a heartbeat as it has lived up to every demand ! ( I really don't count 2 blown bulbs ,and two speedo cables .breakdowns ! :lol: )
I would not hesitate to leave tomorrow on a cross country trip on mine ! ( I wish :pray: )
After you get the things fixed,that previous owners have neglected ... you will have a great bike to ride for many years ! :bowdn: ..............................Tony :-D

Well, I've put 3,000 miles on it since I have gotten it. Right now I'm in the middle of drilling the vent hole in the final drive. I've read where to put the tape at 1/4 inch. What I don't know is how deep to drill the hole. I'm at 5/16 and I can't see any opening. How deep should it be? Don't want to go to deep. Other than that it's been nice to ride. Doing the dragon and Blue Ridge Parkway next month. May end up selling the ST1100 eventually.

ScottM,at 5/16,you should be through the wall,I do not remember how thick it is. :thk: You could take the fill plug out and try blowing air through your drilled hole,gently,and see if air is coming out of your fill hole.

Something else that I've noticed that no one yet has addressed, is the amount of 90 wt. you put in the rear wheel drive. Fill it to about 1/4 " BELOW the fill hole. If you have too much in it, that will also cause the oil to be forced out, vent hole or not. I run synthetic 90 wt. in mine and have had no trouble.
