Markland Backrest
Does the Markland Backrest have play built into it? Mine has about 1/4 inch movement. I took it off and tried to tighten the two phillip head screws and they will not tighten nor can I turn them out, they just spin. Is this normal?? P.S. I like the new format, so much easier to see for the older more mature eyes like mine.

Re: Markland Backrest
If you mean the 2 Philips screws that hold the padded rest to the upright frame bracket then NO, there should not be any movement.
There probably are those spike shouldered blind nuts used and the screw may be seized into these and the blind nuts have worn a round, 1/4" deep by the sound of it, track in the backing so they spin and are seemingly loose.
If you have to remove the upholstery, the lower seam is the last to be sewn tight after the upholstery is fitted to the frame.

Re: Markland Backrest
Mine had slop in the hinge bolt. I pulled it out and put a piece of shrink tubing around it. Greased it up and put it back together. Works smoothly now. I also was losing buttons so, a trip to the local upholsterer and they made new buttons, replaced the snaps for the rear pouch and sewed it all back together for about $50. Now it looks and works like brand new.
