broken rear speaker mounts

I just found one of my rear speakes dangling off the side of my trunk rack the other day. All three of the rubber mounts came unglued from the metal mounting plates and seperated. I've seen posts where the bottom of the speaker housings have broken out but this is different. The rubber in these mounts is glued to the metal mounting brackets on both ends of the mount. The glue let loose on mine. I'm sure from the weight of speakers constantly pulling every time the trunk lid is opened and the speakers being hung upside down until the lid is closed again.

My question is, has anyone else had this happen? Is there an adhesive out there that anyone trusts to fix this properly or should I put my efforts into coming up with a bolt through mounting system that won't rely on adhesive?

Almost anyone who has had a XII for very long has had the rubber speaker mounts split as they are 30yrs old. PIA

IMHO, the rear speakers are a waste you can't hear them at speed and they sure make cleaning the trunk much more difficult. I know everyone wants to keep them. as I said "The next time I have to fix them they are gone"!!! about 10 times.

Many ways to fix them , Super glue works for a while but then they just break in a different place.

In tech tips there is a good permanent fix with a little work involved.

Like I said I would take them off plug the holes with gasket washers and chrome caps or just use rack as a rack.
Just remember!!! to get the speakers apart, the allen screws on the face of the speakers and FAKE!!! , that is not how they come apart you have to take them off from the bottom and they come apart from the bottom.

I have fixed mine about 7 years ago and they're still holding strong.
What I used was recommended by another AVA'er and former webmaster Gary Schill who advised using E6000 adhesive. Bought mine at WalMart but have seen it in other outlets as well.

I used some JB weld on one of my speakers that came off last year and so far it has not moved again.

Yeah I'm aware of how they come apart thanks. I've replaced the speakers which I'm assuming the messing around with them is the reason they gave out. I'll look for some of this e6000. I'm going to Wally World tomorrow anyway. I'm also a huge fan of JB weld. But never used any on rubber. Guess I'll try this route first. If they break again I'll find a more Permanent fix. I do want then on there at this time though. You may not hear them at highway speeds but 90% of my riding is in town and I do hear them then. Thanks

Having tried several cures on several bikes, the last time, I have made a repair , I removed them, cleaned the mating surfaces with acetone and used black silicone , placing a weight on them and letting set up for two days, installed them back on and......
Jury is still out, but no phone call that they came loose from the May 2016 repair.
My thoughts on why the come apart is the mounting of the trunk . If the front plastic mounts that slide are worn and the trunk gets to shaking about , it seems that is the cause. I had that issue about 2 years ago and made up my own delrin sliders.
They may still be available from Ma-Kaw and would be worth checking into first.

I recently had my first one let loose approaching 40 k on my o3'. I fabbed up a more solid mount,but still used rubber. The horrible bumpy,pot-hole ridden streets just shake and jar the heck out of everything suspended up high on the travel trunk like the speakers ! I also addressed the extra amount of movement that I was seeing of the travel trunk, adding the trunk extenders allows more chance of movement back there (of course)....to gain something,it seems that you sometimes also have to give up something !

Tony you are right. I did just add the extenders at the rally. My wife said she can feel the trunk moving more. But she does like the extra room. Give and take. Think I will try to glue them with something for now but when I have more time I will come up with something more solid.

I posted some years ago a permanent fix for my speaker mounts. I posted a two part solution in the fixes forum. . I went to Lowes at the time and found something called well nuts in the hardware dept. They look a lot like the rubber mounts on the Voyager XII but have a metal threaded piece down the center. I used carriage bolts that matched the threads in the well nuts. I then disassembled the speaker cabinets, ground the heads of the screws down flat and inserted them from the interior of the bottom of the speaker case. I think I had to ream the hole I made to fit the new bolts then went through the well nuts, and was able to bolt the speaker back to the steel frame. I did not have to ream those bolt openings. I used stainless steel nuts to bolt the speaker from the bottom just as the original. So far they have not moved an inch nor has the plastic cracked from vibration. Thanks. That is about what I had in mind but wasn't sure exactly what hardware I was going to use. I'll look for something like that when I shut down for the winter.

update. used the E6000 and it's holding strong for the past two weeks now. Hope it holds out until the Hoildays when I shut her down for the winter.

My 03 had the same issue. One mount completely broken. When I pulled the speakers off I found all the other mounts cracked. Used JB weld on all and the screw fix on the one completely broken. Everything appears to be secure after 3000 miles.
