10 quarts

I am starting the restoration of my newly acquired 98 voyager xii and today changed the oil. Opened the plug and about 10 quarts of nasty oil comes gushing overflowed the oil pan. What a mess. Surprised this bike could run that overfilled.

Holy cow!!! Even if it wasn't 10 quarts, to overflow the drain pan, that is HUGE!!!!!

Ah Ha ! the plot thickens ! now we know why oil blew out of the bike and got on your rear tire ? causing as you described in your post from yesterday .

I bought a 1998 voyager today at 1750 which I considered a good price. It has 47000 miles. It was 150 miles away and was assured by the owner that the bike had no issues.
Well I pick it up and begin the ride home. About 15 miles into it I decide to see what it's got. At 90 mph I see a huge cloud of smoke behind me so I pulled over. A good bit of oil is dripping off the bottom off the engine. Continued the ride at 65 mph without incident until I got to the twisty river road about 10 miles from home.
I'm thinking this big beast corners pretty damn good and I got too aggressive and dropped it. Not a mark on the bike. My arm must have saved it.
Of course my wife was behind me and saw the whole thing. She was never really happy with the purchase. Hope I get to keep it.

As Tony said ,now we know why it blew oil out at high speed and load. I wondered if it wasn't overfull when I read your post,BUT NOT THAT overfull Check to see it it blew your shifter shaft seal out.

Pretty good increase in performance by putting in the correct amount of rotella T6. My next project is the progressives in front. The front air system is toast. The back holds air so I'm leaving that for now. Can you guys direct me to a step by step on doing those. I've never touched front forks

I would recommend replacing the rear shocks with airless Progressives, as well. If not, at least change the oil in the rear shocks, as that likely has not been done properly, or in a timely manner, either. If you upgrade the front, the faults of the rear suspension will become glaringly obvious. Cheers!
