Considering 2001 Need Help

Post by Aladinbama »

First off, Hi everyone! I rode my first Voyager today and I'll most likely be buying one soon.
I'm looking at a 2001 with @38K on the clock. The speedometer doesn't work so there's more than that, but the bike seems to be in nice shape and runs really well so I wouldn't say too much more than that. The Owner stated that he hit something that struck the speedometer gearing area - hub (supposedly confirmed during a tire change) and the speedometer doesn't work, the CC doesn't and the self cancelling turn signals don't. The temperature gauge also doesn't work - ???? I've heard reference to jumping a wire for the temp gauge, but are the rest caused by the speedo gear issue?
The passenger radio controls are also in a bag zip tied to the bar and the driver seat has a couple of tears.
What would be a fair price? The ranges I've seen are about 2K to 2700 - I offered him 2200!

Yes,if the speedo drive unit is not working, the Cruise control and self-cancelling also does not work. After my speedo drive failed,I made a habit of greasing the gears every time my front wheel is off.I bought my '99 almost 7 years ago with 22,000 on it for $5000,and have put an additional 42,000 :woohoo: .I have never been sorry I bought it,nor for the price I paid :perfect10:

Welcome to the AVA,,,2200 sounds like a good price if there is nothing else wrong with the bike than what the owner told you,,,,they are a bullet proof bike if maintained correctly... :thewave: :thewave:

welcome ! the price you mentioned sounds very fair and "in line" the repairs that are needed are easy fixes. Do you work on your own bikes or take to a shop ? I bought my 03' for $ 4250. having just turned 16k at the time.....now approaching 40k and the bike just keeps getting better ! they are one heck of a great bike, and also have never regretted buying it ,or the purchase price. Don't lose the best bike you will ever own ,over a couple hundred bucks !

Welcome , Tom from Texas, This is the right place to be for all the parts needed to bring the 1200 back to working shape.
And for a world of knowledge on all things related to repairs, maintenance and those hard to find accessory trim items.
You won't regret buying a 1200 that has been kept in good shape, and if your mechanically inclined we can walk you thru any problems you may find.
And becoming a paid member, you will receive a roster of names of people that will offer you assistance in whatever state you travel thru.
The speedometer controls the turn/cancel : Cruise/control: and also an automatic-volume control for the radio. The stock seat I can help you out with.
The stock suspension did lack in quality and most have switched to different front fork springs and progressive/rear shocks.
Let us know if you get this deal and what you may need for it.

Well, I bought it! I will say this, it's a LOT different than the big heavy bikes I've owned in the past (even my current ST). It has no weight to it and it seems to track a little weird. Other than that I think this is going to be a great relationship!
Now off to the tech center - lol!

If it tracks a little weard it may be the type of tiers it has on it, do you know what it has? Tire pressure is also really important. They should be inflated to 40psi

Welcome to the club and on the purchase of your new xii. They are great riding bikes that handle more like a cruiser than a touring machine. I paid $2000 for my 90 with 24k on the clock two years ago. Mine also wandered around the road a bit and found it was the tire pressure. don't follow the owners manual which is way to low. I run 38 up front and 40 in the rear and it rolls down the road straight and true.

Tom I also have a 2001 I purchased in Texas some years ago. What tires are on the bike? I had Dunlop 404s when I bought it and yes it tracked funny. I almost opted not to purchase it because it steered so strangely. After coming here and listening to other riders I shod her with Dunlop Elite 3 tires and that ended the weird issues with tracking. Later I installed progressive springs front and rear and that had the bike tracking and riding a lot like my Kawasaki ZRX1100 which I later sold. Make sure your speedo cable is not broken, if it is you can find used instrument clusters on Ebay. Much easier to replace the entire unit than trying to fix one component. Make sure your gear at the front wheel is spinning when the wheel rotates. If it isn't replace it. Once you have the speedometer cable sorted out grease it with white lithium grease and it will last for years. The Voyager is a great bike. I still get compliments on it where ever I park it. Hope you have many years of fun with it.

Well, working through the issues - fortunately none of them seem too serious.
Radio won't hold setting and has to be reset on each start - blown fuse - check - fixed!
Speedometer doesn't work - took front wheel off, no gear, seal, and drive bent a bit. Ordered all three and when I went to install I discovered the hub assembly gear wasn't turning. Played with it, lubed it, played some more and gave up and ordered another - put off till next week.
I guess while I'm waiting on that part I will check the temp/ sensor wiring and see if I can get that to work, hook up a set of LED driving/fog lights, add some switches and an extra fuse box to run new goodies through, and consider putting a Wolo Bad Boy on it. Anybody have any experience with the new Wolo horn - the 619 I believe? Sounds deeper!

Bad Boy horn is bad ass. They're sold at Harbor Freight. Use their coupon for the best price.

Personally I couldn't find a place to mount the 519 Bad Boy on my Voyager without making serious cutting of my faring. I wont do that for just a horn. Ended up giving it away.

I just picked up a BadBoy horn today and I do love the sound. Now instead of cutting, I am looking to make a bracket to fit it in my 1986 Voyager XII. not sure how well it is gonna work, but I do want to put it in there. And if I can get the one in (trying left side of bike first), I may go and pick up a 2nd one and replace the other horn too.

Part of me was thinking of doing some fabrication and making a bracket to go inside the front fairing and installing the horn where the upper vents are. I rarely use them and even when they are open, I don't get much air through them. I get more from between the forks.
