Miss under acceleration
Still kind of a newb with this bike, but on the way to work I developed a miss under acceleration.
Out of the blue, half way here on a 38 mile ride.
Smooths out when I get to speed and level off. Hits really hard, hard enough to shake the bike.
Any ideas? Maybe some seafoam through the tank? or?

Re: Miss under acceleration
It could be dirt in the carbs finding its way to a jet at higher loads,or plug misfire under those loads, either partialy fouled plug or week spark to that cylinder. There are drain plugs at the bottom of the carbs.Drain one at a time, watching for dirt.Start the bike long enough to refill that carb ,then drain another one.If that does no good, pull your plugs and inspect them for fouling, and for damaged plug caps.Let us know what you find.

Re: Miss under acceleration
SeaFoam will not hurt anything, and it is a very inexpensive option to try. Not knowing what RPM the issue occurs at, I will hazard a guess that it might be the main jet. When you hit a certain RPM range, the main jet opens up, which gives the engine the most fuel. If this is plugged, it could explain what is happening.
I agree, draining the floats, looking for crud, is a great idea. SeaFoam will dissolve minor varnish deposits, absorb small amounts of water, etc. I run it once per month, as a preventative measure; I also use it to mothball my bike for the Winter months -- fantastic product! I would also recommend replacing the spark plugs with NGK Iridium plugs: they are resistive, platinum (100k miles in a car!), and they require less energy to spark -- great for weak ignition systems, much less $$ than new coils, around $9/plug. New wires are also a great idea as these bikes are not getting any younger. Whether new plugs and wires, solves the issue, or not, they are a good PM. Cheers!

Re: Miss under acceleration
Dropped half a can of seafoam in it yesterday on the way home.
Figured 6.5 gallons wasn't close to the 20 gallons it would treat, so I halfed it.
Picked up new plugs last night, Autolite 4163s. Anyone ever use them?
By the time I got home, last five or six miles (38 miles one way) it was running better.
60K on the clock, she might just need a tune or?
May be a stupid question, but what kind of fuel filter does this thing need?

.... it's been posted that the scoot is made for 87, NOT a wrench, but if Ya get
pinging in hot weather, 89 will fix that....
I"ve run Chevron gas for years, my nephew used to be a scoot wrench, certified multi
makes... He used Chevron to clean stuff, he said it was "magical".... good cleaner stuff...

Re: Miss under acceleration
Question ? did you drain the float bowls into a clean container to visually see if there is any crud/rust/ or water as suggested ?
It could also be you just picked up a tank of bad fuel.
On the subject of spark plugs - be darn sure you clean out the plug well from ALL bits of debris down around the plugs before removing then and letting crap down into the cyl.
Do a forum search on fuel filters , there are several options and vendors listed.
Hope this helps you out and don't turn a small issue into a bigger problem.
Gene.

Re: Miss under acceleration
My bike had the same symptoms and I did all the above....Seafoam, drained the carbs, replaced the fuel filter. I discovered the problem was a corroded spark plug cap on cylinder #2 where it connects to the plug wire.
Plugs #2 and #3 are a pain to get the plug wires out, so I would go ahead and replace the caps while you're in there.

Also, please pay attention to ekap1200[Gene]about cleaning out the plug wells!! That can be a challenge to get all the dirt out ,but it is critical.

Re: Miss under acceleration
The only time I have a similar issue is after I've washed the bike. I get some water in the plug area and it causes it to have the problem. But after about 20 miles, it clears itself right out. FYI, 20 miles isn't much for me because that is just a ride to my friend's house.

The spark plug cap seals can rot, If the drain passages have become clogged and water lays down in the well. Make sure they are open and clear.

Alrighty... So.
Seafoamed the bike.
Changed the plugs.
Wrapped one wire with electrical tape-quick fix till I can find another one...
Bike is, knock on wood, running pretty well.

Re: Miss under acceleration
I have been following this problem since it was first posted, Even though I have a 1700 instead of a 1200. At first, I thought it was some kind of beauty contest, (Miss under acceleration) .
Further reading described exactly the same type of problem I have been experiencing since I rode home from Hurley. Misses when I accelerate, smooths out when desired speed reached and speed control engaged. In my case, if a hill comes up, the engine just accelerates as normal to maintain the set speed, WITHOUT MISSING!.
Edited because I typed 20,000 instead of 30,000 miles, and I included the re-flash info.
This is what puzzles me! Anyone have any ideas? My bike is a 2009 Voyager 1700 with about 30,000 miles on the clock.....and it was re-flashed last April by Ivan, I was the second NorCal voyager to do so. Bike ran great at first, then about 3,000 miles later, it started the miss-

Re: Miss under acceleration
You might want to consider Ivan's Performance reflash of the ECU. I had it done some time ago after first installing a PC 5. Even with a dyno tune, my '13 V'ger never performed like it does now. I've experienced better mileage, (44mpg winter-time, as much as 50mpg during Summer months), and overall better throttle response with no hesitation.
