01 Voyager Clicking and Virbration

I have a question about a 01 Voyager with about 80K on it. It started virbrating and making a clicking noise on the way home the other day. It has new front and rear wheel bearings and speedo drive. The only other thing might be the rear final drive or is there something else that might be making noise and virbrating?. My question is there a way to test the rear end on the bike? Also if i need to change it out how hard of job is that? Thanks for any help. Bob

... putting a U-joint / drive shaft in tomorrow am...... already changed the final drive, and
it shakes so bad, the mirrors are useless at 50mph...... it's been guessed at the labor to do the
change is @ 3 hours.....

Hello Bill. Be careful not to loose the retaining pin in the u-joint yoke/splines.
When you changed out the final drive, was there a tapered/coil spring on the end of the pinion shaft ?
Also you may want to ; replace the two o-rings on the slip/joint tube. Since you will have it all apart....now is the time to do it. Use a good water/proof grease on that.
Once you get your shaft out, you will know if the u-joint is shot by the way it feels moving it about.

Hello Bob, If your u-joint is bad you will feel the vibration on the left foot peg of floor/board.
As to how hard of a job it is, well that depends on your skill level and tooling that you have on hand.
Get yourself the repair manual, we have one online you can download.
The swing arm will need to be removed.
Once you get your final drive out, Keep in mind it does NOT have tapered bearings for the pinion shaft, So it will have some play at the input end. The pinion shaft has a needle bearing and a ball bearing.
The drive shaft is held in place by a pin and a spring at the rear end on the pinion shaft.
The drive shaft is an assembly , There are some that have replaced their u-joint with one listed that has a grease fitting. I would not recommend it, it is weaker than original and not up to dimensional size.
It can be done by a professional shop, but the exact replacement u-joint is about 100.00 without the retaining C-clips and is not available by model. It is for a prarie/four wheeler.

NOT doing it myself, not a wrench and not old enough, yet- God Willing - maybe some day,
to fool myself into thinking I am!!! GBG I have been blessed, many ways - but, by finding
one of the best wrenches in the business and have used him going on @ 20 years!
I'll leave it in his capable hands!

I had, what I was told by this wrench, a very good wrench to change the final drive, and
that part feels fine, and it looked to be almost new!!! Onward!!!!

Well the drive shaft fixed it, more to do, but the vibration is gone!!!!!
The U-joint was barely hanging into the shaft, floppy is a simple
statement.. pics were not an easy option, so I just tossed it.... onward!

Glad to hear you got it fixed .I bought a driveshaft from a salvage yard,and greased the cross.I then installed it during my last "winter service". The original felt perfect however.Using the tools in our repair shop made it about an hour job to press the cross apart,dab a little grease in, then reassemble it.

Hey Cushman Eagle,,,,instead of pressing the u-joint apart,,,how about tapping a grease fitting into the u-joint

Hello Jim, perhaps you did not read my reply to your post on ( driveshaft ). I stated that our OEM u-joint cross is not cross drilled. there is nowhere to drill/tap a grease fitting.
Hope this clears this up.

when/if my 03' ever needs a repair in the drive line...... I will just order a NEW drive shaft complete,
it will last the rest of my lifetime........... then after I " kick the bucket" my son can deal with it !
