New Here. What Should I do?
I'm new to the Forum. I just was gifted a 1986 Voyager, which I plan to pick up this weekend. It only has 12,000 miles on it, but has not been running or kept up very well. I plan to make it a project. Any idea where I should start? Where can I get parts? I thought about stripping it down and turning it into a cruiser, but I prefer touring bikes. My present rider is a 2007 Goldwing. Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Voyagers don't strip down well. naked they are butt ugly, like C3PO without the gold skin. As with any project you need to assess whether it is worth the work. Start with the engine. Drain and clean the tank. Remove the carburetors and clean them. make sure the diaphragms and still in tact. Check compression, if it actually has only 12,000 mile on it the compression should be good. I hope the engine turns over and is not seized. If it has spark great, if not check the coils and the ignitor. Your ignitor should say 1248 on it. If not don't run it till you get it changed out. Get it running and work on the cosmetics later. On the home page of the AVA you will find links to a service manual. If you cannot find it you can access one in my signature.

Re: New Here. What Should I do?
Before you even attempt to start the bike, first check the ignitor part number. The ignitor is located under the false tank cover on the right side. If you attempt to start the engine, especially with a low battery with the "old" ignitor, you could easily and quickly cause damage to the engine. See this article, and search for others in this forum (hopefully they were not auto deleted), for "ignitor".

PLUS 1 on what BikerKing.biz said, Check the ignitor first before any attempt to start the bike. If it's a "good" ignitor then you just got yourself a great gift, hell you got a great gift either way!
Congratulations and welcome!

Re: New Here. What Should I do?
You are certainly welcome to ask any questions about your VXII here.I learned a lot,and saved frustrations by searching this forum .Another thing I would add, is to do a search on the ignition switch harness, which has caused issues, including me.I think the ignitor number you want is the 1248.I hope you enjoy your VXII as much as I have enjoyed mine
