Clutch cover bolts

Post by cushman eagle »

I have kept randallor's post of broken clutch cover bolts, dated April 17-2015,in my mind since he posted the problem and the results. This fall I decided to try spraying the bolts with a little squirt of Liquid Wrench after a ride every week or so. :hmm: During winter service I decided to remove, never seize, and reinstall the bolts one at a time,in case I ever needed to get to the clutch. All but 3 came right out ,2 of this took a little rocking back and forth. The top front one, which is not a blind hole, took me 1/2 hour of gently rocking, spraying both on the front, and in the back, until I got it  They all now have anti-seize and move :woohoo: I am certainly glad I went through that now, instead of on a trip. :gig:

Hmm, I removed my clutch cover on my 96 to have it chromed a couple of years ago and didn't have any problems. Carl did my 02 with no problems. Didn't know this was a problem. Good to know. I did have a stubborn bolt on a brake Rotor once.

Hi Everyone,
I to wanted to remove my clutch cover bolts, Just to put anti cease on them. would it help to use a hand held impact driver and a small hammer
on them to help loosen them first. After applying break free on the bolts a couple of times. I chickened out, So far left them alone. Clutch works fine. Just want to change the fluid in the clutch master cylinder . I bet that cover looks good in chrome!!! Now I'm really thinking about it. but do not want to get into a " Barrel of Snakes'.

Should one encounter a small diameter screw/bolt which is uncooperative in coming out, I have found that my DeWalt 1/4" 18 Volt impact driver and the appropriate socket does wonders in removing steel fasteners in aluminium casings.
It is not as brutal as an hammer driven impact driver which while using, I have snapped off screws until about 5 or 6 years ago when I decided to try my cordless DeWalt.
Once it starts to unwind liberal penetrating oil may be needed to aid in the removal.
