Question about stock fork brace bolts

Is there a torque spec for the fork brace bolts? The ones that go through the crush washers/inserts? Bike is a '90 if that makes any difference.

I just looked in my service manual,and it does not give a torque spec that I could find. :hmm: sorry.

General Information section of the Service Manual, page 1-11 lists the torque for non specified fasteners.
The brace bolts being 8MM require from 10-13.5 ft.lbs. of torque.

It is particularly important that you don't overtighten these bolts as you will start to crush the inserts and pinch the plastic fender too much which will lead to front fender cracking and eventual replacement. And replacement fenders are not cheap if even available anymore. If the crush washers haven't been replaced for awhile, or look fatter in the middle of the crush washer- replace them.

A good point Gary, the ones I manufacture are a full 0.025 thicker wall thickness. Carl Leo recommends replacing these stock ones at every tire change. When you look up the oem inserts they list as ( collar-fuel tank ) so I am leaning towards someone not thinking the problem thru entirely when this was designed. And I have talked with owners of the Super Brace and have been told by some it really didn't make much of a difference. When I ask them did they change these out they have replied NO. So there is a large number of riders out there still that don't see the importance of this item. I have even seen them missing all together with the brace smack dab on top of the plastic....

I'll agree with what you said about the SuperBrace too Gene. I've seen some that said it didn't make much of a difference, but when I put one on my bike several years ago, it made one hek of a difference. Firmed up the front end quite a bit, and improved the braking and handling as well. The superbrace I still use is the old version and not the newest, but I can't help but feel either would be a big help- IF everything else like fork stem bearing tightness, wheel bearing condition, front tire air pressure, etc. is up to par. This would also include making sure your rear wheel bearing are in good shape, and the swing arm bushing are lubed, free, and adjusted correctly, otherwise handling will be impaired.

Oh, and that hat, came into the picture back at the Durango, Colorado rally. Had fun with that and the rhinestone imbedded western shirt with fringe that I wore with that outfit back then. :gig:
