Temp Sensor Jumper wire

Post by Aladinbama »

Well, time to fix some things up.
My temperature gauge didn't work so while I was doing MANY other things decided to pull the battery tray and hook up a jumper ground to the sensor housing. The PO has a wire running from there to the negative cable of the battery (actually has it clamped into the terminal). Shouldn't that work or what's my next step?
:please: HELP

Starting in the 1996 model there was a wire lead that connected the thermostat housing to the negative battery cable. It's purpose was to provide a more positive ground path for the housing that the coolant temperature sensor is mounted into, but it is not meant to connect to the sensor itself. It is meant to connect to one of the thermostat housing mounting bolts.
The sensor connects into the main harness with a short length of Yellow coloured wire with a White tracer. The sensor end is a 3.9 mm female connector and the harness end is a 3.9 mm male connector.
There is a single similar coloured wire with a female connector exiting the main harness in the area of the cruise actuator/radio amplifier, behind the upper cowling/fairing plastic. That is where the short "Jumper" wire connects, and without this short wire lead the temperature gauge doesn't work.

EDIT:
I was incorrect in saying the wire from the main harness is around the cruise actuator/radio amp, in fact it is just below the rear shock air line oil separator canister, about a foot or so farther to the rear than I had stated.
