LED Mod problem

Post by odgreen »

Hey guys, I changed out the side marker lights and the side blinkers with LED lights and now my blinker indicator and lights blink at a fast rate. What do I need to do to correct this? Any help will be appreciated.

You need to get an electronic flasher to replace the OEM. The LEDs don't pull enough power to make the OEM flasher work properly. Superbrightleds.com has them, they're plug and play. You can also get adjustable ones to change the flash rate if you like.

I was at Advance Auto Parts the other day and they have them. They are called LED load equalizers. Looks like they are starting to stock a good supply of LEDs. I noticed the same rapid flashing when I installed some LEDs in my rear turn signals in my Kia Optima. You might also check Amazon.com.

Thank you Wahrsuul for the info, now to figure out where the correct flasher is located. Time to hit the E-manuel. Ed

I thought "load equalizers" were resistors used to make the OEM flasher work correctly?

... you replace OEM with the correct/functional flasher for LED's and it will
work fine with no mods....

"correct/functional" includes polarity issues. I've bought modulators that didn't work because of this. The issue was stock wiring on that bike (a dual-sport, not a Voyager) had different polarity for the different sides ... when the left was flashing. But the same polarity for right flash!

I still haven't sorted it, but others found the right modulator and I just need to look it up.

I do know that LED conversions can be a PITA. When I do the XII, I'll rely on other threads here that tell exactly how to deal.

Yes, an ep34 flash unit can be bought at any auto parts store and will correct the hyper flashing that comes with an LED conversion of any turn signal.
Also, I found a couple wire sockets on my 90 OEM wire harness that were wired backwards and would not allow the LEDs to function. When these bikes were manufactured, LEDs were no used and regular incandecent bulbs don't care about polarity, so it was no big deal to make sure the polarity of every light socket was correct. If you convert to LED and have one that doesn't function. the first thing to do is check to make sure the power is coming to the center of the bulb and not the brass casing/or ground.

If you have trouble finding that relay locally, Amazon.com has them very cheap.
