Cruise doesn't work

Post by sgilbert14 »

I got my first ride on my bike on the weekend and started to run through things when I found that the cruise will not work. I read that it could be the brake switches so I will clean and check these out this weekend. Note, the rear brake switch did not have a cover on it, which I have ordered. I have done some searches here and found tons of post on the issue but have not found a step-by-step list of things to check out in order... anyone know if one is posted someplace. I have power to the switches. Thanks

The first question I ask is did you try cruse in 5th gear? it wont engage in anything under that.

If thats not the cause then try spraying some contact cleaner into the brake leaver switches and clutch handle as there are micro switches that will cancel the cruse in those locations that could be gummed up.

Also have you replaced any bulbs with LED on that bike?

If you change the one in the display on the faux tank it sometimes wont work.

On mine I had replaced the OD light in the meter assembly with an LED and cruise wouldn't work until I put the incandescent bulb back in.

Great, thanks.

I was in 5th gear so that is not it. I will do the spray when I get back to the house in a couple days.

As for the LED's, I have not replaced any of the dash lights but will note that for when I do change the dash lights over.

put an ear to the front brake switch location and make sure you deffinately hear two distinct clicks. One is the brake light switch and the second is the cruise cancel switch. If you only hear one click, try pushing the the brake lever out, away a bit harder. You should hear the second click at that time. If that is the case, it's not the switch but the brake lever pivot point is dirty and not traveling all the way out on it's own. This was the case on my bike, so I disassembled both the clutch and front brake levers, cleaned them (they were very gummy dirty). afterwards they pivoted freely and the clicks were audible every time. The next thing I found with the system were loose wires on the switch housing of the right handle bar switch housing. Fixed those two issue and my cruise has worked great ever since.

I had my cruise go out, it would power on, but not activate. There's a listing in the manual about the pin-out for the plug in the control box. You can test all the connections there. Turns out my controller was bad. Got a new one from Carl Leo, and all is well with the cruise.

Thanks, I did clean the switches and still no cruise. Seeing that they are calling for storms this weekend I guess I have a good day to dig into connections.

Mine would power up but not set. I unplugged and cleaned all connectors related to the cruise control. That fixed it! Never underestimate the simple things! :gig: It was necessary to remove windshield, headlight, and front fairing to gain access to all connectors. Not as bad as it sounds!

ok, pulled the fairings and cleaned every connector that I could locate. Went for a ride last night and the "set" light still will not light when the switch is pushed. Any ideas?

I assume the initial cruise light comes on but the "set" light does not come on. There are three switches that are involved and I don't think anyone mentioned the ones on the carbs. Mine was bad and I simply jumped the plug and it started working. Left it that way until the next time I have to mess with the carbs. Have you checked that one? Good luck..........Gator Mike

Mine was doing the same thing - power on, but not set. There's a big plug on the control box where you can check all the connections/switches. Turns out my control box was bad.

Thanks, I picked up a 2nd control box and the same thing. I jumped the carb switch but have not had the chance to see if that was it or not. Hopefully tomorrow..

I cleaned them all but have not pulled them and cleaned them up. I'm not sure of what reading that I would need to get or where/how to check them..

If you have a copy of the Service Manual Supplement, the diagnoses for the cruise control is in chapter 15,and is quite thorough  If you do not have the supplement, see if you can find it on line,as I believe someone offers it.I think it is Mr.Jensee. :hmm:
