Ignition switch removal...

Post by timmerz_1 »

Can anybody tell me if the ignition switch can be removed so I can get good access to the wiring harness with the fairing on?

Yes it can, you have to go at it with a long extension from under the front fairing between the shocks. Look up there with a good light. Cover fender & plan your moves so you do not lose any bolts putting it back is a bugger but not to bad..

Do not know if you know about that harness being ty-wrapped to the frame left of the switch, if it is still ty-wrapped, CUT the ty-wrap off!!

The ty-wrap stretches the harness when you put bars all the way to right and when going back left it kinks the harness and many small wires in the harness get broken this way.

Very common problem with the XII, cutting the ty-wrap simply lets the harness move with the motion and all is well.

Make sure you check ALL the little wires in the harness for deformity as there may be some already damaged..

If that is your problem? you can repair wires without removing ignition switch. Remove faux tank cover lift harness up and repair. Hope this helps .. Ride Safe...

Yup, that's where I'm at so far, but I don't have enough wire left to work with on the switch side of the break to get a clean splice comfortably...if I can get the switch out I will have the entire cabling out where I can inspect and repair as needed...
Thanks a mil for the info!

Tim,
I found myself in the exact same situation a few years ago and did the same thing. Removed the ignition switch which allowed more play and room to add/splice a wire in and attach it to the other end of the break. Fixed once and has worked absolutely fine since! I soldered my wires in and covered with shrink wrap (two layers with the outer layer longer for added insurance.
Good luck, let us know how you make out sir!

Finally getting back to this project since then, about to get up under with the extension, hopefully with the switch set free I'll have enough play to pull it out partially on the left side to give myself more room for the splice...just remembered there's cabling from the switch to the right grip!

Never mind, just looked again, nothing going to the right, sweet!
