Had a tire issue

Post by Highway Rider »

Ever since I install this set of tires I had been having issues when in a curve. It would start to hop/wobble. Finally found the issue . Apparently when the tire was manufactured there was half of the tire the had more tread or 1/2 of the tier had less tread how ever you want to look at it.

This picture shows the tire down to the ware bar

This picture shows that there is no tread left

Continental Milestones? Used to be when tires were manufactured in their country of design origin (US, UK, JP, DE, FR, etc.) that manufacturing was very consistent. One Pirelli M66 Route tire manufactured outside France required nearly 3 oz. weight to balance on my XII, but rode fine. Lowly Duro Boulevard rear from Taiwan only required 1/2 oz. to balance plus rides and corners smooth.
Perhaps a factory quality control issue .... :corn:

Yep you have the brand and tire style correct. I have to agree with you that it was a manufacturing issue.

This was the issue that I had with the front tire back in June. Same brand and type. Tire was 3 years old when it was sold to me.

So it was balanced, but out of round. By, like a .5 mm? Seems like that wouldn't be a problem when there's lots of tread.
I mean, I get that the funny wear isn't right; but I'm not sure that means there wasn't as much tread there to begin with.
But tire wear is usually a great mystery to me.
(Note to self: pass on those Conti's.)

Thought my Pirelli MT66 Route was properly seated when I installed it, reacted similar to your tire. After carefully examining, found it wasn't. broke both beads, relubricated with Windex, quickly repressurized tire, now both beads fully seated. Was kind of deceptive but rolled and cornered better after corrected.
Wonder if one bead on yours looks seated but isn't quite, leading to out of round sensation and uneven wear. :thk:
