I had a BMW K1200LT and used to carry one of our dogs in a Kuryakyn Pet Palace on the rack. I wish to do the same with my Voyager but will need to relocate the rear speakers to accomplish this as the bag won't fit otherwise.
Has anyone ever relocated them to the sides of the trunk? Or is there another suitable spot?.
Will the rack cope with 12lb of dog and carrier?
Any information would be appreciated.

Re: Relocating Rear Speakers
Several years ago at the Red River national rally, there was someone selling a rack that covered almost all of the top trunk lid. It replaces the factory rack. It also had speaker mounts extending below and in front of it. This would probably work well for you. I have one and have had no trouble with the trunk lid. I keep the loads really light. I suspect that putting some weight on it could cause stress cracks.

Re: Relocating Rear Speakers
Removing the rear speakers completely isn't really an option. My pillion (she who must be obeyed) is hard of hearing but enjoys the music.
I think I need to relocate the speakers and maybe put thin aluminum bars between the bolts of the rack on the top of the trunk to spread the load over a wider area to prevent stress fractures. Kawasaki say 1kg (2.2lb) only on the rack but I have heard of people putting much larger weights on without any apparent issues

My oversized rack has 2 inch washers with a rubber gasket under them to help cushion everything. No issues over the last 15 years.

How much weight do you put on yours? I need to be able to put on 12lb minimum.Barry wrote:My oversized rack has 2 inch washers with a rubber gasket under them to help cushion everything. No issues over the last 15 years.

I try to keep weight as low as possible, so the top rack has never carried more than a large stuff sack with jackets & rain gear. The heavy stuff ended up in the cargo trailer!
