Can My Cycle Run If The Fuel Pump Doesn't Work?

Post by JeffHicks »

This is a follow-up to my previous thread about "hard starts." Mods, please merge it if you'd like...

So I've hooked up a push-button bypass switch on my fuel pump, to see if I can prime the carbs.

What I'm finding puzzles me.

The fuel pump doesn't appear to be running at all - ever. Not when the starter is engaged, or when the cycle is running. Unless it is extremely quiet, and doesn't vibrate while running.

Two questions:
1. Is the fuel pump so quiet you cannot hear it, or feel it vibrate?
2. Will the cycle run without the fuel pump?

You need to give us more detail... your saying you , hooked up a bypass switch on the fuel pump..... Or do you mean you hooked up a switch on the starter relay ?

And to answer the other question. NO the Voyager will not get fuel without the pump.
But your also saying you don't hear the pump even when " the cycle is running" ..... Well if the cycle is running then the pump is working at some point in time .

I just read your other post on hard start. You apparently did not understand our post on the prime circuit wiring connection.
It is NO where near or AT the fuel pump.. We are opening up the starter relay circuit. AT the starter relay.
I hope this helps you out

I suspect also that if your gas tank is full you could run the engine for a while because of the ability to gravity feed the carbs until your fuel level drops below their level. It should have enough pressure to prime the carbs until then. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Thanks for your input guys.

Yes, I did misunderstand what "Cushman Eagle" was talking about in the other thread, regarding a "starter relay interrupt swith."

Anyway, I stubbed a push-button switch into the fuel pump wiring.

Now my question: The fuel pump seems to "pulse" rather than simply provide a steady flow of fuel. In other words, it clicks rather than hums. Is that correct?

Yep it clicks like mad. If you have the starter interrupt switch on you can hear it really loud. .............Gator Mike

I do not think the carbs will gravity feed. :hmm: Even if I have the tank full,I still have to prime my carbs if I let the bike set for a week or more. :thk: I use a battery tender if it sets for a week or more also.
