Plug wires

Post by SoTexBill »

Okay... so finally have the opportunity to do some maintenance work.
Does anyone know a source for plug wires? Are they specific to the bike or?

The plug wires are 7mm stranded copper core wires available in bulk, although maybe not anymore it seems for a lot of items nowadays,
at most automotive parts stores. Belden is one manufacturer I use a lot of.
Be aware that there is a very small tapered plastic washer under the serrated nuts which compress the rubber gasket around the wire into the coil body.
The numbered rubber sleeves will come off the old wires with some lubricant and a low low low pressure rift of air from an air dusting gun. Use lots of soapy water when pulling the wires back through the numbered sheaths.
Since you are going to this much trouble check the plug caps with a multimeter, they should read 5000 ohms approximately. Usually I get a reading of around 5024. If the reading is not close to 5000, replace them as well. NGK SD05F is the correct plug cap model number.
Have fun,
Dave

This is where I bought my plugs and caps. https://www.ngkwholesale.com/index.php

4 - NGK SD05FP PLUG CAP - $9.88
4 -Denso IX24B Iridium Plug - $35.64
2 - NGK J1 Wire Connector - $9.90

The plug caps have the waterproof boots. The J1 wire connectors were bought for the ferrules that I needed to replace on the stock coils. This is an oem part that you cant buy separately so this is a way to replace a bad ferrule instead of buying a new coil. I bought 4' of Borg Warner bulk 7mm copper core wire at O'reilly Auto Parts. Also I removed the wire protective jackets off the original wires and reused on the new wire and found some heat shrink numbers online to use on the wires also.

Make sure you blow out the wells and unclog the drains before removing the plugs. Amazing how much crud gets in the wells.
