Anyone ever use these valve stems?

Post by scottolds »

Getting ready to change out my tires and figured I would replace my valve stems.

Came across these aluminum 83 degree angle ones. They have a dual kit for the Voyager XII and you can buy replacement rubber seals for them. So I figure they should be good for the life of the bike.

My goal is to make it easier to check and air up my tires. Also, I am considering putting on a tire pressure monitoring sensor and all those recommend using metal valve stems if you get the screw on kind instead of the inside the tire kind.

Any thoughts?

The Amazon valve stems look similar to the the one that is on the rear of my 1993 voyager that I've owned for three years. Previous owner put it on so I'm not sure of the brand. It makes checking the air pressure a lot easier.

Those Amazon ones are definitely cheaper.

The other set says the front is a smaller diameter than the rear. So it includes an 11.3 mm stem for the rear and an 8.3 mm stem for the front.

Since I have not yet pulled the wheels I don't know if the valve stem diameter holes are actually different on front and rear wheel.

Can anyone confirm this?

That looks like a good price for 4 of them. Sure looks almost like this one:

Do you have buyers lined up for your extras? I'd be interested once you prove they fit the front!

I've only installed them on the front but I don't see why they wouldn't work on the rear. Just rearrange the rubber washers and maybe leave the collared rubber washer off. I always use rubber cement on the mating surfaces to ensure no leak.

I seem to remember a post where someone installed these on the front and they hit the brake caliper. I think they have to be mounted 45 degrees instead of 90 degrees. Maybe someone could verify and post a picture?

Can a 90 degree stem on front come in contact with anything inside the fender? I'm running one on mine.

Doesn't seem likely, but...

... just going out on a limb her, but if you're running one, I'd say NOT!!! GBG

The front brake housings would be the only thing, I measured my rear 90* and
it looks like I'd have adequate, not plenty, of room... of course, it'd depend on
what I receive and how I install it..... time'll tell.....

Yes they have to be turned backwards 45 deg to clear the brake caliper.

Well, upon further review...

The rubber based 90 degree stem I installed on my front wheel IS grazing the caliper. There's a witness mark on the tip of the cap. Not through it, but clearly there was contact between the valve cap and caliper. Rotated the stem to gain clearance.

I received my Aluminum valve stem set and I also ordered the chrome steel set from Amazon.

I got both in case I had issues with either one.

Out of curiosity I put each on the scale.

the Aluminum one weight .4 oz and the chrome steel one weighs .8 oz.

My plan it to try out the Aluminum ones first. Once I get to that project I will post my results.

... I use RideOn tire sealant and balancer... I do it because it dynamically balances....
any offset would be adjusted for...

Just make sure you have no interference with the front brake housing where it sticks out..
I need to replace my $)%*#$*) a crap and will leave it rotated 45*... I literally cannot
check my air pressure as I loose so much.. I just have to fill and check with the fill
gauge......
