E-4 dunlop

Post by cushman eagle »

With a wet week in the forecast,I plan to pull my front wheel for a tire change.Does anyone on the forum have any experience with the E-4 ? :hmm:
If the center groove has been a problem on grooved roads or steel grate bridges,I will stay with the E-3. :thk:

I now have about 800 miles on my front Elite 4 but I have not yet found a grooved road to try it on. I still have an Elite 3 on the back.
It has a very smooth ride, drops very nicely into a curve and holds a steady line, but I recall that that was how the Elite 3 handled when it was new.
I will say that the low speed wobble that seems to have been there forever is totally gone. Of course I did replace the front wheel bearings when I put the tire on.
And I'm still looking for that grooved highway.

An additional note about the Elite 4.
I typically mount my own tires with spoons but I quickly realized that it was way too tight to get it on without hurting it or me.
I had the local shop mount it and he mentioned that he had to use quite a bit of air pressure to get the bead to seat. I didn't ask how much.
And it seems to be narrower than my old Elite 3. Of course my Elite 3 didn't have much tread at the end with 26k miles on it.

I have had an e-4 Tire on the front of mine for almost a year now. And I have been on Groove pavement roads and did not notice any issues with riding.

I was able to put 235 miles on my new E-4 this weekend :woohoo: including a section of grooved road being prepared for resurfacing, and found no problem with the E-4. It felt as stable as the E-3 under the same conditions. Now the 404 that was on my bike when I got it,not so much. :rolling:

I spent the money last night and ordered a set of Elite 4's from Dennis Kirk, should receive them Monday. Now if I'm not too lazy and get off my laurels long enough to pull the wheels and get them ready I should be riding on new rubber in 5-6 days. Got both for $317 +change, no state taxes and qualified for a $50 rebate from Dunlop. I can't say I feel too guilty about spending the money since both chunks of rubber will cost me under $280 (after rebate).
Anyone who remembers back in 2013 I was getting a Nexen mounted for the rear and the "tire tech" blew it apart. At that time I was basically forced to get whatever the shop had that fit so I could ride. It was a friends shop so I got a brand new tire under cost (if think he charged me about $80) and that tire just now needs replaced so I can't really complain about the life of it (even though it wasn't what I wanted).

I put E-4's on about a month ago. Weather hasn't been great here in Cleveland so I can't give a review yet. So far I have not experienced any ill affects from the Center groove. Heading to Americaid in June (I think. Long story) Should have a better feel for these tires when I get back.
I had a shop do all the work. New tires, new rear brakes, supper brace installed. It cost me more than Scott paid but there was an issue with the hitch. Last trip to Americaid I had my luggage rack on the hitch with luggage attached and low and behold I got rear ended by a Hardley Davison. At the time I thought he had only bent my luggage rack. Low and behold he had bent the hitch. The right support arm was hitting my rear axle. this caused a major problem getting the rear tire off. 3 guys and a lot off prying, pushing, tapping we where able to get it off and straighten the hitch as best as possible. I can't believe I didn't feel this when I was riding. $700 later I have new tires. :bat:

I just removed both front and rear Dunlop 404,I have not heard anything good lately about any dunlop tire car or bike mine absolutely horrible. My experience with them, on the highway any truck passing you or you passing them threw my front end all over the place. I felt that I had to walk it around corners or the front end would break loose on turns, constantly had to fight to keep the bike straight and even at low speed, a light grip on the bars, the tire would cause a death wobble. Road snakes were a night mare, when i changed the front out it only had 1500 miles on it but the shop said it had extreme cupping and wear. I found an inexpensive tire SHINKO 10 SRT/90 installed for 115.00 no issues ( put about 300 miles on it in a month.
Handles like a brand new bike, no fighting corners, doesnt want to right itself when you lean and doesnt fell like its going to break loose on turns. I would think that i should have gotten more miles considering the name and cost, imagine getting less then 5,000 miles out of an eagle gt ?
I have spoken with other riders on different bikes and not one of them has been happy with any of the dunlop tires ( we all know about opinions).

My '99 had a 404 on the front when I bought it in 2009 with 22,000 miles on it,and it handled poorly also (the rear was a Dunlop E-2). :cry2:
After getting on the AVA I read that the 404 was no good on the VXII and put on an E-3,and the bike handled like a different bike!
The E-2 was good until I got a nail in it,then I went with an E-3 there.
The lowest miles I have gotten on the E-3s was 17,000 on the front to 25,000 on the rear.
I have had no handling issues with the E-3.
I decided to try the E-4 on the front this time, and find no issues with it ,but I only have about 1300 miles on it yet. :thk:

I put on a new set of E-4s about 2 months ago. Just did a 600 mile ride to Americaid in Lake George. Highway and back roads. Hit graded roads on 90 in construction and had no problems. Hit speeds up to 85mph handled great. Very stable on the twistes. Before I left Cleveland got my $50 rebate from Dunlop. That made the wife happy. Lol

George the Elite tires 3 or 4 were just designed for this bike. You might find a better tire but overall including the mileage you cant do better than a Dunlop Elite tire.

Getting a weird ring around the front tire. It is about 1/4" from the center and sticks up about 10 thousands. The only way I can describe it would be that the harder compound was not put in the center. I am going to have it looked at. May be a factory defect. It might just be me but it feels like the bike wonders a little from side to side. There is no shimmy. It is only on 1 side of center. I can see the ring all the way around the tire but it doesn't stick up all the way around. :hmm:
