brake solenoid?
Out of the blue, my cruise stopped working -- it switches on but I can't Set it. I've been chasing various switches/sensors and connectors, when I discovered that my brake lights are screwed up too. I was checking the brake lights by pushing on the pedal with a broomstick, bike running. The lights came on fine, but wouldn't go off. Not even after restarting the bike. Not even with the pedal brake switch completely unplugged.
Is one of those relays near the starter solenoid for brakes? Could that also be behind the cruise problem?
I couldn't figure it out from the parts manual, service manual, or Search. And I don't feel particularly stupid this morning.

Re: brake solenoid?
Just took a look at the wiring diagram. There is indeed a brake light relay. If it's not obvous which one it is, you may be able to figure it out by the colour of the wires feeding it

Re: brake solenoid?
Okay, that's the middle of the three behind the headlight. Unplugged, and the brake lights go off. This cluster is upside down, off its bracket. It could hold water. This relay is corroded -- other two probably are as well.
Thanks. Your diagram is much better than mine.

Re: brake solenoid?
Okay, the other two look fine.
27002-1051 (Geez, $40 for a little freekin' relay? The assembly of three is $135 -- I reckon that rubber unit is pricy!)
Thanks again for your help.

Re: brake solenoid?
The XII has two relay assemblies of 3 relays each. One assembly ("head") is behind the headlight, and the other ("side") is under the left side of the fake tank.
My wiring isn't exactly like the chart, but based on a preponderance of evidence I get:
relay (location)
- main (side, front)
- fan (head, left)
- headlight (side, rear)
- brake light (head, middle)
- ACC (head, right) This is process of elimination: mine is bl/y, br, y/r, bl/w.
- starter (side, middle)
I might have left and right on "head" backwards. Not sure how the assembly was originally mounted (I've done some modification there).
Somebody else has probably done this better.

Relay Alternative
The 4 pin 12V Relay that our bikes use Denso P/N 056700-5260 is Toyota part number 90987-02004 and
cost $11.84. It is also a Denso relay and works great.

Re: brake solenoid?
Before we get too complicated, Neal have you checked to see if the brake light switch is sticking? It is down by the brake pedal and some WD40 will do wonders stopping it from staying on. It is also adjustable to pedal pressure.

Re: brake solenoid?
Meant to add to my post....
It would make sense if your brake lights are on that you could turn the cruise-control on but not get it to 'lock' to a speed as putting on the brakes would normally interrupt the CC lock. I coudln't find the CC module on the wiring diagram - I assume it has it's own wiring diagram which would show the connection to the brake-light circuit somewhere.

Re: brake solenoid?
Thanks for looking. I hope to find out pretty soon. Got my forks back. Waiting for LEDs, headlight cable, and brake lines/pads to put it all back together.
I'll get that Toyota relay today -- gotta go into town for car parts anyway. When it shows up I'll put the pricey OEM one in my spares bag.

Re: brake solenoid?
BTW , you can get the Toyota relays much cheaper on eBay. I was having relay problems a few years back thanks to my 10 pin connector. I ordered extra on eBay with good results.

Re: brake solenoid?
Mike, Wait til you hear the other weirdo mods I have in mind.
VoyKimmer, I got a Toyota relay for $12 right over the counter, totally PnP. Compared to $50 (with shipping, and waiting), I don't really need to go cheaper. Fingers crossed, that'll fix the cruise too.

Re: brake solenoid?
Mr Jensee, thanks for the post on the WD40 for cleaning the sticking brake switch contacts... Been having this issue of late, need to do that tonight, maybe. Much appreciated! Cheers!
