Moto cross helmet
Anyone on here try wearing a moto cross style helmet?..I was wearing a half helmet but was wanting more face protection and it's 17 years old..so I pulled out a nice hjc moto helet I had collecting dust..I took off the visor/peak..I loved it. Eyeport is bigger. Vision less, restricted than a full face..cooler..I wore sunglasses with it..it's DOT rated..same test as street helmets..any thoughts?
I think it actually looks pretty good too..I know it's not as much facial protection as a full face but it's a lot better than an open face..it quieted down wind noise too but I could still hear the stereo well..

Re: Moto cross helmet
Rush you need to check with your state licensing because it may not be street legal. Moto Cross helmets have to meet a different standard than Street helmets. Street helmets have to offer more protection for your brain. A standard full coverage helmet should do what you want and will be legal.

DOT motocross helmets meet the same standards as street helmets. If you like it, wear it.

Re: Moto cross helmet
Good to know. In the old days it was hard to find a DOT off road helmet.

Re: Moto cross helmet
Maybe wear it with racing leathers -- just don't have virgin knee pucks because that would be totally embarrassing.
I use a DOT MX helmet on my dual-sport. Very light -- obviously not as much protection. Pretty sure there are different standards/specs.
But then again, anything would be better protection than an ancient half-helmet.

You also may want to check with the manufacture and see how long the warranty is . That tells you how often you should replace your helmets. They may look good on the outside but they deteriorate. Most say to replace after 7 years.

Re: Moto cross helmet
I have used an Arai XD for many years. It's a dual sport/adventure riding helmet. It has the big eye port (fits motox goggles if needed) and removable peak that motox helmets have but also a flip up clear or smoke visor and vents like a street helmet. When it came out it was one of the only ones in the class, Now every manufacturer has them. I'll never use anything else. I tried my old HJC once since I'd been wearing it for a while and thought I was in a tunnel due to the narrow view.
They are on the third version now, inexplicably called the XD4. Pricey but worth it. As I said, everyone makes one similar now so there are more budget friendly ones out there.

Re: Moto cross helmet
My daughter also uses an ADV helmet and loves it. A lot more substantial than MX helmet. She uses a much lighter MX helmet on dirt bike.
Visor (outside) is useful. My cheap road helmet has a flip down tinted thing that had awful optics. I ground off the bottom and put black tape over the rest so it's like a visor (inside). Works great.
