I have to chime in and say that he paid for his bike and he will be the one riding it. What makes people interesting is the fact that we all have different ideas as to what we want or need out of life and this great country gives us the freedom to do them. We have the freedom to express our thoughts and this is being done well here. But as for me, have fun with that Skillsaw. I hope it works out the way "you" expect it to. If you've ever had a car not see you and you hit that throttle and their neck snaps around you'll know why loud pipes saves lives. Just saying.

A good quality horn like this Wolo air horn http://wolo-mfg.com/horns/air-horns/mod ... hrome.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is all you need Ive replaced my horn with this and it wakes up the driver better than any loud bike exhaust.

Whoa Sparky, the laws of physics are against you on this one. Sound travels at 750 ft. per second. Light travels at 186000 miles per second. The sound you think is such a safety lifesaver travels out the BACK of the bike. That sound never reached the oncoming motorists before they would see you. There is a reason they mount the horns on the front of the bike. Can you guess why? So the sound is projected forward. As I have said so many times before, I worked on an ambulance for 20 years. I can tell you without reservation that with all the flashing red lights as well as strobe on top the cab, running the Federal siren a full 150 db. MOST cars running with the windows up and music playing never heard us until we were right on top of them. Your little motorcycle with it's loud pipes are doing absolutely nothing but annoying neighborhoods and in traffic that sound is reflected all over the place so it is likely nobody knows from where you come. You can spout your professional opinion on this but trust me when I tell you loud pipes do not save lives. And yes it still ruins your hearing.

Why in the world would I think I'm smarter than anyone else. Just saying that this is my first luxury bike ever and that I felt the same way. I gave a good hard look at the exhaust to see if I could make it louder. Wow... "Whoa Sparky", as I said I don't claim to be smarter than anyone else, I don't have a "professional opinion". I would like to apologize to Ferroussphinx who started this post. I was just giving my "personal opinion" and agreeing that I looked at the exhaust to try to make changes to it. Obviously my opinion is unwanted and I'll stick to just the facts.

Mr Jensee, I don't know how sound travels I never claimed to, I just know what I've seen and it's pretty hard not to see chrome and loud coming down the street. Some people aren't going to see a motorcycle anyways.

P.S. I was never going to cut the bike it was just a joke that my friend and I had between us.

This was my bike before I bought the Voyager.
This was the pic I sent my sent my buddy right after I bought it. Yea that's a circular saw.
So I feel the frustration of riding something not loud and without cutting it up.

Randallar, did you have to give up that chop to get your "new" cruiser? Tell me it isn't so! That is a nice bike! Something simple and no nonsense!
I almost bought a Honda Valkerie with six Cobra straight pipes on it that were cut just like yours! When I went for a test ride, the salesman told me he wanted to hear me shifting and rolling the throttle on the whole time. It was loud enough at anything above idle to be heard all over Texas! Came really close to buying that bike! It was five years old but looked brand new and had been chopped down a lot.
I like a noisy bike in town, but also prefer the quiet of a cruiser for all day riding. Chop on!!!

Sorry to say I did sell it before I bought the Voyager. I was tried of it sitting in the garage and having to keep dusting it off. I wanted something my son and I could ride. It was a hard ride with only a back brake. But it was fast and ran great. I sold it to someone that would use it and was grinning ear to ear when he rode it. It wasn't my first so I'm not sorry.

Randallar,your chopper reminds me of a friend bringing me has basketcase BSA 650 chopper to put together and get running.It was a challenging experience, ,But I got to learn WHITWORTH language,and had fun doing it.Yeh, it was loud,it viberated,but worse,I never did get use to left brake,right shift[no front brake].No matter how hard you pushed down the right pedal,It Would Not Stop! By the way,that was a good looking chopper

I happen to have a set of Cobra pipes that I just took off my bike. Had them on for a year... They sounded amazing and the bike ran with no adjustments to the carbs at all. I'm selling mine. They are in mint condition. $300.00 + shipping. Or if you're close enough to where I live, I'd consider hand delivering them.

The only reason I am selling them is I decided to go straight pipe on my bike.

I'm planning to replace the exhaust tips with a short piece of basically straight pipe. Saw a vid somewhere in webistan comparing that with stock and Cobra -- fell pretty much right between them, volume-wise. But the tone seemed sweeter than stock. I don't think it'll make any difference at all except on the freeway entrance ramp. I like the way they sorta-kinda roar stock and want a little more of that. I can weld the stainless (already repaired bashes in the headers), and I have to take it all off to replace the oil pan gasket anyway.

But to be honest, I still think the sweetest tone comes from the other end. I've de-snorkeled other airboxes with very nice results. My only reservation (besides the hassle of getting into the rear airbox) is that I'm sure it's important to use nice bevels and not cause unnecessary turbulence. Careful Dremeling might do the deed, but I'd want to leave a smooth finish.

I'm about 98% gawdfersure that the snorkels are only to decrease induction noise (it's a happy noise). Based on my understanding of hydraulics, a bevel at the airbox wall likely will pass more air than one in the middle of the airbox, so there might even be a modest performance boost -- undoubtedly imperceptible, but I'LL know it's there.


As for noise in general, I think we need hearing protection with stock bikes -- see Quiet Ride post. The wind noise is a lot greater than our stock exhaust. And I completely removed my radio and all associated crap, including that second-story on the left switchset and a bunch of wiring all over the bike. I don't think the stuff above (which only come on during hard acceleration) will be anywhere near as loud as cruising air noise. And I want to tour -- that cruising noise is exhausting.


As for the safety of loud bikes: well, I'm coming more from a dirtbike perspective now. I think your riding safety might-maybe increase a little (but I'm skeptical), and nowhere near as much as the general annoyance factor. I think silly-loud is as bad as headlights aimed too high. I don't see much benefit to irritating a bunch of folks who likely already don't like bikes, especially dirt bikes. I don't want increased regulation or closed riding areas, so I'm motivated to be a little more respectful of others sharing the road. (Just me -- having a right to do something isn't the same as being right to do it. But that's okay because I'm not much into choppers, either.)

Yeah you guys are so much smarter. 'Being exposed to high noise levels is cumulative. That means if you dont know the meaning of the word that exposure over time will give you tinnitus and hearing loss. The myth that loud pipes save lives doesn't cut it. The sound comes out of the back of the bike. Drivers out front of you dont hear you till you are on them. It has been tested time after time. But dont bother listening to me I am just some dumb jerk who didn't use ear plugs while fueling up running helicopters. What do I know.

45 years of the hassle of all those items. And yes it paid off. I'm doing very well at 61.
Also, yes, quite is much better. On the street and for sure off road. No, loud pipes do not save lives. They pi** most people off.
Loud pipes are the main complaint against off road riders. I call loud pipes on the street "Look at me" pipes. People with loud pipes often
get speeding tickets because the cops heard them and chased them down. Getting them with radar or speed match. For any sustained highway riding I wear ear plugs.
To each their own but I side with Mr. Jensee.
