1995 voyager-what do i need to know

Post by grumpy72 »

I am thinking about buying an immaculate 95 voyager with high mileage.having owned high mileage goldwings I know its no the miles but the maintenance that makes the difference. Was 95 a good year.I know the very earliest voyagers snapped starter chains, especially if the battery was run down. Thanks for any input.

These bikes are one of the most reliable ones out there. The 86 had the starter chain issue, which was an easy fix by changing out the igniter box. The 95 is a good year. If it is in good shape and runs good, I would not hesitate to buy it. Simple maintenance keeps them going forever!

That reminds me...I just found out if your 1986 breaks the chain, hasn't been fixed before and still has the 1179 igniter Kawasaki is still warrantying the job to the dealer. They only get a 7 hour allotment on time, but that will cover much of the cost for labor, supplies and such. You'll have to look elsewhere for a 1248 igniter.
Dealer for all Air Rider products, and Nolan helmets and headsets.

Thank you for the input. A voyager is the only touring bike I havent owned.I am not a fan of the vtwin voyagers.I had 8 ventures,6 goldwings,1 ultra classic, one royal star tour deluxe, one valkyrie tour.I am really not sure if at age 69 I want another big heavy bike. My favorite bikes were not tourers. My 2 favorites were a 1300 vtx and a heritage softail. I have read the voyager handles lighter than its weight would indicate.

I think this is true. But, like political promises, how often do you read that a bike handles heavier than it's weight would indicate?

You'll see lots of praise here for Progressive fork springs (ditch the air forks), tightening the headset (Gene makes a useful tool), changing the oil in the shocks (or Progressive), and making sure the swing arm is torqued right (you might be overdue for final drive maintenance). Dextron III in the forks and shocks works well. Lots of chatter about tire selection, but universal agreement to ditch any Dunlop 404 front tires. Don has Galfer brake and SS line upgrades.

They handle a lot better if you take off that gangling trunk -- something I'm working on.

Also, the saddlebag lids are prone to fly off. You'll want to fab tethers if you don't already have them.
