dropping the oil pan
I'm replacing the oil pan gasket just because it leaks and I have the exhaust off anyway. I'll replace like a dozen O-rings. What else should I do while I'm in there?
The bike has less than 30K, so I don't intend to fuss with the pump or anything else.
Hopefully while I'm in there I'll be able to see why it's really hard to shift into 2nd. I've read about the 3K RPM thing and cold oil, but mine seems harder than that and even when it's warm. And it's getting worse.

Re: dropping the oil pan
I would suggest using either SeaFoam, or Marvel Mystery Oil after the gasket replacement, adding the specified amounts to your crankcase: both will clean out any sludge deposits (if you use SeaFoam, check your oil color, after five minutes of run-time -- change oil & filter immediately, if it darkens...); the MMO will do other things for you, as well. They will not harm your engine, and they might help it, and the transmission.
Be certain that your oil is the proper viscosity range: 10W-40. Do NOT use 5W-40, such as Rotella T6 Synthetic. I used the T6 for a couple of years, and my bike developed shifting issues: false neutral's between 2-3, 3-4, and 4-5! The shifting issues disappeared when I went back to a 10W-40 oil viscosity... The T6 is a great oil, but not in the Voyager, due to the thinner starting viscosity. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Re: dropping the oil pan
When my bike refused to shift into 3rd gear I took it to the man Carl Leo to repair it. He said I had a mysterious burr on the third gear. Whatever he did it shifts great now.

Re: dropping the oil pan
I look forward to peeking in there. It shifted fine initially but has gradually gotten worse.

Re: dropping the oil pan
Since this blog is slow these days anyway, thought I'd send photos of my "shop".
Ho hum.
The service pit is about 44" deep. I poured it one fall several years ago, planning to build the rest of the rest of the garage the next summer. Alas.
That's a greenhouse canopy, for reuse elsewhere in the yard. It generally pegs the thermometer (120F) these days, but is only up to 100 so far today. (I hide in the pit.) Ergo the blue tarp. But often nice in the winter!Ho hum.

oil pan o-rings
From the Service Manual available from AVA:
To replace these o-rings, it looks like I need:- 671B2590 (1) This 90mm pup goes between the the oil pan and the oil filter housing.
670D2016 (4) One of the internal oil pipes.
670D1509 (3) The other internal oil pipe.
92055-1136 (1) The oil return plug. Looking at it, I think I really need two of these.
92055-1146 (1) Another plug, on the side.
11009-1376 (4) Brass gaskets for an external oil pipe (banjo bolts).
11009-1344 (4) Another external pipe/banjo bolts.
