New (to me) 1200 - Grip Replacement

Post by yustr »

Hi folks. Just picked up a 1991 XII. I've done some of the basic maintenance stuff and am enjoying being back on two wheels. I didn't like the foam grips on it though. So I purchased a pair that were said to fit. I removed the foamy from the clutch side and and slipped the new one one to test fit. It's 1/2" to short! There's a gap between the inward end of the grip and the radio control assembly. Seems they listed the "overall" length (5 7/8") which included a screw-on end cap but didn't account for the fact that the grip end was closed so it bumps up to the bar end plug.

All that to ask if there's a recommendation for a grip that will fit without cutting off the end plugs?

... first thing I'd look at is cutting a hole in the grip end so the end grip
would slide through the hole....

Thanks for the suggestion cranky but the end is pretty stout metal. Plus, I doubt I could ream/drill an opening to clear the bar (7/8") and not interfere with the 4 screws that attach the end cap.

I just cut a 1/2" off end of bars. I am not putting weights back on. I like them this way.

Decided to follow this path. Bar ends came off easily with my angle grinder and the grips slipped right on with no issues. Used an old golf club fitter's trick and used ordinary rubber cement to secure the clutch side grip.

It's a sunny day here in the Pacific NW so am going for a ride right after lunch. :hpdc:

I cut a half inch off both bars using a die grinder. Then I just reattached the bar ends. The new grips were chrome so I painted the bar ends silver.
