fuel pump power issues
So I got this 1989 voyager xii 1200 on trade. well it will idle for a bit but when you give it gas it stalls out. seem to be a power issue to the pump been looking for a schematic for the control of the power think its in the harness its been so molested over the years. Been told this is the place to go for answers.

Re: fuel pump power issues
What leads you to believe its the fuel pump ? How long has the bike sat ? And what have you done so far in troubleshooting the issue ?
Have you , at the least , looked into the air box for rodents making a home there , and also purged the carb's bowls , maybe also a look into the fuel tank and let us know if you see some rust. Did you get a service manual with the bike ?

Re: fuel pump power issues
The fuel pump only runs when the engine is turning, either with the starter or when running. To test it you have to bypass the harness.
I did that with a temporary switch,
so I could prime the carbs if I had not ridden it over a week, the gas would evaporate out to the point I could not start it without extensive cranking.
You can research the info I used by doing a search on this forum titled"hard starting after sitting solutions" about nov 2008.
Let us know what you find out.

Re: fuel pump power issues
If the key is on and you tap the starter button, the headlight should illuminate. Power will now be applied to the fuel pump. You can then verify the pump is working correctly by opening the float bowl drain screws one at a time. Be sure to look at the condition of the fuel draining from the carbs. The drain hose should be just in front of the swing arm on the left side.

Barry, what cushman eagle done was a great idea. And it makes it very easy to prime and also test the fuel pump. I followed his advise on this and installed a push button on my system as well. I purchased it from the co. named DEL CITY and also purchased the rubber cover to the button. It is a momentary push button that is NORMALLY CLOSED . depressing it opens the contacts and interrupts the starter/ relay's field coil. So when depressed and the start button is pushed , only the fuel pump runs . what is nice is you can hear the pump running until the float shuts off the flow and the pump stops. Really helps out when you drain the carbs and wish to flush the bowl out a bit more while you have the bowl valve opened up.

Barry,I did not remember you had an earlier 1200 as I understand the first 2 years what you describe is true, that changed later, and does not work on the later onesBarry wrote:If the key is on and you tap the starter button, the headlight should illuminate.
