Stereo/Headset options

Post by usmalenurse »

Have been using the AirRider headsets for about 9 years now and they are shot and need replacing. Losing sound to one side of the helmets; both helmets as it were. I know it's a wire connection or broken wiring from the weight of the cable because you can push it or pinch it tightly and both sides work momentarily. I disassembled one of the them today to see if I could find a broken/loose wire and possibly reconnect the wire but that's a no go because it seems to be inside the speaker itself. Anyway need to replace them; possibly helmets as well since they are the same age as the headsets and looking for the best options to replace them. According to the AirRider website replacements would be around $200 each and wondering would the Sena or Cardo systems work just as well. I mainly listen to my IPOD and talk to the Mrs on the back of the bike, occasionally the radio but not often. I already have the adapter installed by Pete for the IPOD. The IPOD is also bluetooth capable and I bought a new Garmin which is bluetooth as well. Not that tech savvy but wondering would a bluetooth transmitter/receiver work in the adapter port and enable me to listen to the IPOD/GPS as well as communicate with my rider?? Thanks ahead for any suggestions or help..... :help:

...I'm a fan of "statement of requirements"...

Make a list of:
- must have - minimum needs...
- would be nice - now if I could do this....
- whoop-de-do - bells and whistles.. WOW!!!

Hate it when I find a solution and later discover something that
I really wanted won't work.... JM2C

My main requirement is to listen to the IPOD through the headset and communicate with my passenger. Listening to the radio would be a plus as well as hearing GPS prompts.

We have a Sena SMH10R we have been using for maybe 4 years.
We use it to talk to each other, and if I am using the Garmin Zumo 660 for directions,I will blue tooth connect it to the intercom. The Sena will respond to the GPS when it gives directions, cutting off communication with Peg,until the GPS is done with directions, then my communication returns with Peg . :woohoo:

Thanks....have you tried or do you know if you can pair up more than one device at the time? Like my IPOD and another device or is it limited to one device plus communication?

I just bought the Shoei neotech 2 with the Sena which is made to fit the helmet. Wow is it clear, it will pare with 8 helmets. Plus, bluetooth phone and best, conference calls. While riding someone called, I took the call and then tapped the button once again and Trisha was part of the call.
Price is steep but a great helmet, got ours at Cycle Gear when it was on sale. Battery life is about 10 hours.

Gert and I have had the Sena SMH11 since I think 2012, and have never regretted it. I have also learned that the Sena will pair up with some of my ham redio gear, as well as a CB. I think Sena is one of the best devices of this type available today.

Thanks for all the replies. Looked at the Sena and the FreeWire system but way too expensive that route. Checked with Neal about replacing the whole shabang with new helmets etc since they are all over 8 years old and just leaving the cords as is. Had a couple of days off and tore back into them and finally figured out the problems. Some tedious work removing them from the helmets and found a couple of wires that I was able to resolder. Had to take the actual speakers apart to find the issue. At least I can wait till the winter months to see if I want to pursue other options. Thanks again!

My Air Rider headsets also had wires break a few years ago. I ended up just removing the headsets. I no longer ride with a passenger and don't ride with anyone. So my CB radio which used to be important stays off. I've been enjoying the quiet.

Had the opportunity to use a Senna 30k last year on a ride to California with a bunch of my mates. Very impressive (also very expensive).
