Things that go "BUMP" in the night

Post by GrandpaDenny »

Got home from school about eleven last night, looked out the window to check on Gertrude and didn't see her :!! . Almost had a heart attack thinking she had been stolen (and thinking of someone who said 'get rid of the disc lock, our bikes don't get stolen')! Whilst getting ready in another room, looked out the window and saw her. Something didn't look right, but she was there.

This morning, my neighbor's blowing up my phone and knocking on my door, asking me about the bike. I look out the window again, and see that she's on her right side. It was :windy: VERY windy yesterday.

Went out, pulled what was left of the cover off of her, popped her up onto the crash guards, then popped her right up onto the side stand. Neighbors' jaws dropped at how easily I did it. I admitted to there being a technique to it (I am pretty darn strong too). I've dropped her on her right side so many times whilst working on her that I've gotten really good at it. I have also practiced lifting her from both sides.

No damage, no fluid leakage :woohoo: .

Denny, similar thing happened to me and my XII. It was setting on the street in front of my house and covered. I had taken my truck to work (it usually sat right in front of the bike blocking the wind) and a kind man whom I've never spoken to before (lived a few blocks away) noticed it was over. He and his son (both riders) lifted the bike back up on the side stand. He then asked around and got ahold of my 1 daughter who lived a few doors up. Told her what happened and gave his contact info.
The reflector/marker light on the right saddlebag broke but that's all. That was the last time mine sat out with a cover when we were expecting high winds. Cover acted like a sail and caught the wind.
Glad you had no damage or fluid leakage. If you keep Gertrude outside and under cover, try to put her close to something to help block the wind (like a car or truck or shed or even a dumpster)!

Best way to park our bikes if have to be outside in high winds is parked on its side stand not on center stand right side up wind in 1st gear. Mine went down from center stand when it was brand new, $2000 worth of damage. That was 2004.

Last time I leave the cover on in high winds! She was on the side stand, about ten feet from a building. Took another look at her yesterday when I put the cover back on (was expecting, and received today, snow and sleet and rain). No damage at all to Gertrude. The cover suffered one small hole on the bottom where a strap tore out. Elastic is all still good.

I'm building a garage, and it isn't going well. Looks like my bike will be outside, covered, all winter. But I cut down the windshield and dumped the trunk, so it has a much smaller side profile. (And presumably less susceptibility to cross-winds.) I think it'll be okay; but I sure am looking forward to that garage -- will have a lift embedded in the floor!

I saw this ad on Facebook yesterday for this little tiny portable motorcycle shed/garage thingy. They make a couple of sizes, and a trailer version, and they are ridiculously inexpensive ($65 I think for the "standard" version). Even the large version is less than $90. Yes, it's made out of plastic and plywood. I don't remember if I looked up the shipping costs. I was thinking that price is too low, there must be a catch; also their biggest size I don't believe will fit a VXII.

Hmm, looking at the web site https://blossomdelicacy.myshopify.com/p ... zW6XW2v27s the interior dimensions are big enough, with room to spare. Hmm...

Hokey smokes Bullwinkle, free shipping!

Looks too good to be true. I've searched for something that looks like a true review, but all I found was regurgitate https://www.bikebox24.eu. If this were real, the better-established moto journalists would've been all over it.
