Oil after pan change

I know the rule of “3qts 22oz and forget about it” and in the past have followed Carl’s rule. Finally after some time with her apart, I have put most of my bike back together. Besides all new gaskets in the cooling system I had replaced the oil pan since a previous owner had stripped out one of the drain plugs and decided silicone was better than trying to fix it right. So my question is, when having the motor out and the pan replaced, should I still hold true to the 3qts 22oz rule or should I expect to put in a little more? I assume even during most oil changes, we don’t get 100% of the oil out, but with the the pan change, I can say for sure, it was bone dry until putting oil back in it.

I'm thinking you should add the spec-sheet capacity and then change it fairly soon afterward. I have used cheap dino oil as a "flush" of any rebuild contaminants like rogue sealants.

Different topics:
1) The drain plugs often take hits from road bumps &etc, especially as the suspension sags. I mean, your plug might be road damaged, not stupid-PO damaged. You might look for related damage under the pan.
2) While the pan is off, I suggest replacing that bevy of o-rings in there. I suggest replacing all rubber and gasket bits at every convenient opportunity.

I use the sight glass to determine the oil level after an oil change.3qts 22 oz does have the oil in the middle of the glass after a change,but probably not after a pan replacement.It has been mentioned about the reliability of the glass,but IF THE BIKE IS LEVEL,I have never in my 10 years of owning the bike, have I seen the glass wrong.The bike needs to be level side to side,and for and aft.In my garage on the center stand,I have about A 3/16 shim under the right foot to make it level,using a level on the top of the cruise box.
We find the same issue on our heavy trucks.the dipsticks can show +or- one gallon of oil depending on how level they are when we pull the sticks in the morning.

In your case, I believe 4 quarts is the proper amount. However you could always start with the three quarts and 22 ounces and add a little more later.

I always park on the center stand in the same spot. The sight glass rarely will show the same level. Sometimes over full, other times empty. I always check overnight after letting it sit. Therefore 3 qts 22 ounces & forget about it.
