Lately, I’ve been spending way too much time on I-40 between Albuquerque and Los Angeles. It’s always a slog – I just want to get there. But one of these days I’ll make time for that Rt 66 loop to the north. The Nipton Road cutoff has also been on my list.

To the extent you can from the pavement. This is a good place to have 4WD.

If you’re feeling pretty confident riding on gravel, there’s the Moki Dugway (https://www.dangerousroads.org/north-am ... y-usa.html) -- but I’d sure hesitate in the winter!

They call it the American Alps, or something like that. There’s an old hotel in Ouray (“you-ray”, a famous Ute Chief), called the Wiesbaden, that has a “vapor cave” in the basement. That is, they built the hotel on a hot spring inside a cave – all natural. We last stayed there a couple winters ago (my daughter was in an avalanche training), when the temps never got above 0. The cave spring was 110, and the outside pool was 108. The springs heated the whole place – “if it gets too hot, just open a window”. The village also pipes water to some cliffs (just as you come into town from the south), which they use to build ice falls. In the winter, there can be a hundred visitors ice climbing. I mean, it’s big mountains and a great little town. I’m sure I’ve been there in the summer, but don’t actually remember right now.

That would be the Hermosa Valley. In the winter, it’s full of elk, much like Jackson. And that’s a great photo of Engineer Peak from Purgatory Ski Area. (Since you're into bicycles, they have an annual race between Durango and Silverton, between bikes and the train.)


I hope to take a loop up and down the Rockies – have family in Spokane. But I’m waiting until my good old dog goes over the rainbow bridge.

Freeways are boring. I believe it was Charles Kuralt who said of the American Interstate System, 'the fastest way to get anywhere without seeing anything'.

There are places in the great country that are best seen from freeways. At night. Going fast.

But my problem has been not enough time. (Somebody else whose involved -- I'm retired and have all the time in the world.) It's been a couple years since I could go as slowly as I wanted.

You can sit down and turn into a sick piece'a blob or do it my way,
eat right and exercise - use it or lose it....

I want to be functional up to the day I die, none of us get out alive...
but I am not going out sitting in a chair in front of a 60" TV watching
400 channels of informercials with pablum running down my chin!!!!!

Interesting postulation, as I recently turned 60. In the last year I have returned to motorcycling after a 30 year hiatus, and gone on my first long-distance trip via motorcycle. I have also graduated from community college, and am going on to a four-year school in September. I have reconnected with long-lost friends, gained and lost my birth family. I do not watch TV. At all. I have one, for watching movies, and I think it's been a year since I unplugged it for some reason and haven't had reason to plug it in. No cable. Haven't watched TV for over 20 years. My best friend died about a year ago, after spending the last twelve years of his life bedridden and in front of a TV. That would be worse than hell for me, to be stuck in front of a TV.

what I do watch, I do on my PC and that is only some Netflix slow down before bed stuff...

Now onto health... are you taking care of yourself, my favorite saying,
eat right and exercise - use it or lose it You need some form of aerobic
exercise and you have to like it or you won't do it. Gotta work that body!!!! GBG

Onto life, our life choices, hope you are very comfortable with your future,
the one YOU chose. When you get to retirement, you blow down all the walls
in life that you created. You've been told how and when to live life up to that
point, then, poof, it's all gone!!!! You can do ANYTHING!!!! No limit! Most
folks take a year after retirement for that to sink in. I like to tell folks to
take a full year before they do anything permanent, most of the things they
think about are memories, not future plans...

so I stopped at the Chevron/A&W place.. for a rootbeer and burger!!!

Had a hot dog for lunch, finally!!!

Enjoyed reading about your trip.

Reminded me of my trip to Deadwood last year. The black hills area was some of my favorite riding.

Now my Voyager is all back together and ready to go somewhere.

Hopefully a fall trip will happen this year.

You might just need the gear. I replaced mine to convert from reading miles accurately to reading speed accurately -- I mean, nothing damaged. The gear was only like $15.

Yeah, I'm just saying that maybe that's all that's broke. Or (from memory) even the winky sheet metal thing -- might just need bending back. I'd sure check before buying anything.
