Road vibration

Post by RDVOYAGER »

Frustrated!
Have a vibration in the '96 XII.
Had a new set of Michelin Commander III's put on her at beginning of season. Love the way they handle. But, have a road vibration when going in straight line. Lean either way and vibration goes away.
Have checked steering head bearings and reseated them per Don's video.
Just replaced wheel bearings, old ones were fine though.
Replaced badly worn speedo receiver.
I can pull clutch, even turn bike off in neutral, and vibration is still there. Lean either way, it goes away.
Certain road surfaces can make it lessen or increase.
Hate to get rid of new tires for different ones. Like I said, love the way they handle. But, vibration is aggrevating.
Considering putting Elite II on front, and Elite 4 on rear if I can't get rid of vibration.
Anyone ever have similar issue, and if so, what was your fix?
Anyone else have problems with Commander III's?
Thanks

I need to replace both Commander II's, soon. Was/am planning to get Commander III's.

If folks are having issue with the III's, I will go back to Pirelli MT66 Route tires. They do not last as long as I would like, but their traction is superb. Cheers!

Maybe the bead isn't seated all the way, all the way around. Or something else making it a little out-of-round.

Possible swing arm bearing preload needs checking, just a guess.

Elite II? Ye gods, how old is that tire? And as for the E4, if you don't already have one on hand, it may be difficult if not impossible to find one, as they are out of production, and have been for over a year. I recently found one, but it's already three years old.

As for the vibration, have you checked to see if you have something embedded in the tire, like a nail or something? A vibration going straight but not in curves sounds like something in the tread to me, or it could be out-of-round. Sometimes tires wear a little funny, and/or get chunked (pieces of tread knocked off the edges of the grooves).

I have the commander III's and no vibration issues. Really impressed actually . Perhaps a factory defect as suggested
