Not sure if this is where to post questions, but I have a 1995 Voyager XII and am having issues with 3rd gear. The transmission is kind of clunky, but I know this is common. This is my second '95 Voyager so I'm fairly familiar. However, when I am going through the gears... First, and second shift fine other than being clunky. When I go into third, as I am accelerating the transmission starts to pop. It does this if you go through third accelerating fast or if you are driving the bike like it is supposed to be driven. It seems to do it at 2000 rpms if you drive it normally. It is like the transmission pops and the bike jerks. When I first bought the bike about 2 months ago, it did not do this. I changed the oil and put in the Rotella oil that I would put in my old voyager. Any thoughts??

Bummer on pulling the engine...however, I've done that too!

I have a '00 engine I'd sell, needs a new head gasket, but runs great. has 46005 miles on it.
If it comes to that of course? :?:

Mine did this also and as suzib6sw said it required removing the engine to repair it. I had a spare engine with a broken starter chain that I swapped the transmission, shifting dogs and shifting drum with. One of these was bad (not sure which) but it repaired the problem. I'm leaning towards the shifting drum and linkage but can't confirm it. If you are mechanically inclined and have parts it's a time consuming job but do-able. If not I'd opt for another engine. Either way it's a PITA and costly. :bat: Good luck .............Gator Mike

Those symptoms could indicate too lean a fuel mixture at that light load and RPM.My 1996 ford ranger does the same thing and I do not know EFI anywhere near well enough to fix that :hmm: I have repaired that problem on older gas farm tractors by increasing the fuel mixture in the transition jet,but the carbs on the XII are a little more complicated.Send Carl Leo a message,he should be able to help you out.

I had the same issue on my '95. If I shifted to third and lightly kept giving it gas it would usually stay in gear. If I tried to accelerate I could feel the dogs slipping in and out of the gear. Doesn't take a whole tear down but does have to come out and bottom opened up. It was a bent shift fork. Carl set me up with a used set of gears and shift forks. This was before his move, not sure what he has now.

How does this happen that the shifter dogs or shifter fork gets bent? Is this from aggressive shifting or does it just get wore out? Anyway to prevent this from happening?
Thanks

The best way to prevent it is, oil changes & make sure the clutch fluid is changed when it gets dirty so clutch operates correctly, clean clutch slave cylinder, also lube clutch pivot bushing on lever, Sloppy shifting (hard shifting) can cause it. Not lubing shift linkage, linkage gets stiff and does not go into gear all the way, shift linkage gets out of adjustment from wear, Sitting at stoplite in neutral and panic stomping it in gear because you forgot it was in neutral. Pulling (lugging) to much in a gear, meaning you should have been in a lower gear when you give it gas puts stress on dogs to keep it in gear. & just plain miles , they are straight cut gears and eventually will wear out but should last basically the life of the MC. Factory machining may have been a little off on a few in assembly.. Most XII's now have had previous owners so you really do not know how they had driven them. Basic maint is the best preventative..

Thanks guys! This is exactly the info I needed, I have the same issue in 3rd gear. If I can do this w/o a complete tear down I will be happy.

I have a 94 and the shifter sticks up in third but once i let the clutch out it drops into third but still pops. Could this be linkage on external shift mechanism?
