89 Voyager -- Oil Leak on left side?
Greetings All!
I picked up an 89 Voyager XII last year with just under 52K on it. I pulled it out of winter storage a few weeks back (has 59K on it now -- had 58 when I put it away) and I'm noticing one heck of an oil leak coming on the left side that I cant track down. Its collecting on the front part of the exhaust pipes, then dripping down. What are some common areas for leaks on this bike on the left side? I hears the Water Pump could be doing something similar, but why would it leak oil instead of coolant?

Re: 89 Voyager -- Oil Leak on left side?
The water pump is famous for the oil seal to work out on the shaft and then engine oil can leak thru the weep hole in the water pump, pump is driven by a shaft in engine. Remove transmission alum cover to get better view of area. Take a mirror (magnifying one if you can) and put it under exhaust pipe and shine flashlite on it so it reflects up where waterpump bolts up to engine, there is a small space where you can see the weep hole and if you see oil in there that is where it is coming from. when engine is running you can see the shaft turning. If that is where it is coming from you need to take out water pump and replace seal, not a big job, about 2 hours or 2 beers and a couple a cuss words, and a seal kit from Carl Leo. The ceramic coolant seal in the water pump rarely goes out. If that is not where the leak is clean up all of the area where the oil is coming from and spray baby powder up in there and run engine and it will show you where it is coming from. Let us know what you find and we will go from there..

Also, when changing oil, refill with 3qts 22oz only, over filling can also cause oil leak and a lifter tap. There are 2 drain plugs to take out when draining plus the oil filter.

Hello , here is a pic of the weep hole , on the water pump. If the water pump seal goes it will weep coolant , and if the oil seal on the engine side goes as in this pic. Well as you see it will weep oil.

Re: 89 Voyager -- Oil Leak on left side?
Greetings All!
Its way too windy out to get a real close look, but it looks like the water pump is the culprit! I will get a closer look tomorrow hopefully when the wind dies down.
Where can I get the gasket kit to get this repaired? I saw a step-by-step of getting the waterpump out, but then it abruptly ended and it sounds like a P-I-T-A to get it back in. Any advice?
Thanks guys!

They don't call it wind lake by accident.. we've got sustained 30mph winds today!

When I had the problem I replaced the seal and the O ring on the pump and the coolant pipe.R0ckf0rd wrote:

I got the seal and O rings at a local bearing supplier.
The seal and O rings are not vary expensive I bought 2 of everything and kept one on hand, I figured if the seal came out once it will probably come out again.
I did not take the water pump apart.

See my above post. Carl Leo, is where you can get the correct seal kit to do the job and if you need info on doing it he will help you out better than anyone. Voyagerparts@bellsouth.net 731-413-8666 best call you can make..

Re: 89 Voyager -- Oil Leak on left side?
R0ckf0rd has acquired my 89 Voyager. I have joined the Wing riders with a 2000 GL1500 and as luck would have it, as soon as I hand it off to a new owner, something goes to heck with it. I have had VERY few issues with the old Kaw, and would of expected the same for him.
I will be helping him get this addressed (as he is a little mechanically challanged - but dont tell him that)
As always - the people on this forum are AWESOME with sharing their knowledge, experience and friendship.
By the way, R0ckf0rd and I have worked together for 8 years now and is a wonderful guy, so I know I can tease him a bit... and live

Re: 89 Voyager -- Oil Leak on left side?
Hey Everyone!
Quick update -- Last weekend Dean stopped over and we tackled the waterpump. 9 hours and a gasket kit later and shes back up and running! Its been a week and not so much as a drop of oil on the ground! It got pretty bad right before the change -- I had it running for two minutes and had to shut it down because oil was pouring out of the weep hole!
Strange thing was -- the old gaskets looked ok!
Anyway -- shes alive once again and running like a raped ape! Thank you to everyone for the helpful info, and Carl Leo for the excellent gasket kit!
Also, a special thank you to Dean for stopping over and doing (most) of the manual labor!

LOL - Andy failed to mention that #1- it rained halfway through the project. #2 - we took a 2 hour lunch. #3 - when he said that I did most of the manual labor, he counted himself, getting up out of the lounge chair that he was using to watch me to hand me a tool that was out of my reach or refill my Diet Coke, as helping! LOLQuick update -- Last weekend Dean stopped over and we tackled the waterpump. 9 hours and a gasket kit later and shes back up and running!
Ya it took longer then it should of, but never having it apart before, I wanted to study everything and make sure it was back together correctly.
By the way - he always referred to the Voyager as an "old mans bike" when I had it before. He now know's the difference and is loving it!

If you mean that o-ring, I'm coming up with 92055-1266. I tried to find a parts diagram I could copy, but no luck. I believe it's this one.
