Yeppers, been there too. I ran out about 10 miles from a gas station, right in front of a most sketchy land-grant community. (Predates the US and doesn't entirely recognize federal -- much less state -- authority.) But before I could finish being upset, some very nice Nortenos stopped on the freeway, gave me a ride to that gas station, and then back. I filled their car with gas and gave them the gas can.

This is an easy fix. Search here on "Mustang" to find a Mustang PN that crosses perfectly, available everywhere. (I think it's in Dollar-to-Dollar too.) Take off the seat, unscrew the sending unit (top of the gas tank), and pull it out. Unplug it, let it dry, and swap out the indicator-light sending unit (need a solder iron) -- the gage sending unit is on the same stalk. The new one will tolerate getting soldered back in. Didn't fuss with insulation, just put it back together in a way that the wire connections won't screw up.

I don't really know whether my dash light still works because I totally quit pushing it.

Twice, in work rigs, I ran out of gas on rather desolate stretches in NM ... but just happened to be close enough to coast right up to a gas pump. :woohoo: But y-all already know I was born lucky.(Well, one other time, not quite that lucky.)

And yeah, it's swell that these bikes come with manual control for the gas mileage -- located on the end of the right handlebar. Mine gets low 30s at 80+, but mid 40s at 70-75. Shot up to high 50s on the Natchez Trace (50mph).

Ok now I don't feel so bad about my gas mileage. Something to remember is that our bikes were built during the 55 mph national speed limit, so they are designed to get their best mileage around that speed - actually, like almost any vehicle, around 45 is where the peak mileage occurs (I wonder if that's still true of modern vehicles?).

Combination of Philly stop-and-go (like stop signs EVERY BLOCK) and commuting at 70-75MPH - 38 mpg.
Running through the hills and twisties of DE, MD, and PA with the club, with some unsanctioned "play time" thrown in - 45-49 mpg.
Following a Concours 1400 at 85-90 mph on the PA turnpike - 26 mpg last I checked. Been over a year since we've ridden together.
Thrashing The Dragon - 51 mpg IIRC.

Weird, ain't it?

My "low fuel" light seems to work, but the one time I ran out of gas (on the PA turnpike running with the aforementioned C1400) she konked out right at the pump in the rest area. Took 5.8 gallons to fill. I can almost imagine what's down in the bottom of that tank after 23 years and 97000 miles.

Day 6 384 miles Fairmont MN to Milwaukee Wi

Not really much to stop and see but my wife took a few shots from the back. Tomorrow we had tickets for a double header Brewers VS Giants. We did notice that the temps had dropped but the humidity had gone up.

Day 8 80 miles Milwaukee to Chicago along hwy32 Lake Michigan shore

Knowing we wouldn't be putting very miles on today I looked on a map for a scenic route. I noticed on the map "lake Michigan circle tour" Googled that

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... ZvtRJbJPnZ

That looked pretty cool. We would ride some of it heading south. It turned out to be stunningly beautiful. We said we would come back some day and do the whole circle tour.

We stopped @ Racine WI Windy Point Light house

Then we worked our way south to Chicago.

My favorite sandwich is a "Chicago Italian Beef" so this was paramount for our lunch stop. Found a good one.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/Z7m4TQQv9rqAZ1Nr8

After lunch we checked into our hotel. Once we unloaded everything we decided to ride into downtown to see the sights. We made it about 10 miles in the stop and go traffic. After an hour of that and witnessing 2 car wrecks on either side of us, we turned around for the hotel. It was crazy. Walked to a nearby restaurant for deep dish Chicago pizza

Day 10 230 miles

I had stayed in contact with the previous owner of our bike, Chuck, who wanted us to stop by if we were close. So we loaded up in the rain and headed south to Martinsville Indiana.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/rBfGK2BPSCnm8RbN8

It rained off and on all day. Again absolute madness trying to get out of Chicago area. Semi trucks especially seemed to be crazy. Any way once we got on 65 south traffic got lighter but the rain got heavy. We made it safely to Martinsville and met Chuck for dinner. He was glad to see the bike again and happy it was being well cared for and used appropriately.

Day 12 424 miles Columbia Mo to Wakeeney KS

Not much to see or tell about. Some pictures taken but nothing worth sharing. Kansas, man is that a flat and windy place or what? Checking into our hotel in Wakeeney, I over heard the lady in front of us ask "Is it always this windy?" Front desk lady responded "IF I had a dollar for every time I was asked that I wouldn't be working here!" Honestly I had to pitch the bike over sideways to battle wind all day. It was so windy that a road work crew we passed was trying to paint striped lines on the road and the truck was being blown around so that the stripes looked like a drunk sailor had painted them.

Clip of said painted lines

Yeah, what you see is what you get. But I've always wanted to crank a couple turns on snow skis.

But taking a right in the Alamosa Valley and then up to Salida ... that's a wonderful place to be. From there you can go north to the really tall mountains or west on US-50 past the Grand Canyon of the Gunnison. Hard to go wrong from Salida.

Some people at the park had snow boards with them, I assume to ride the dunes. We ride up to Salida the next day.

Pretty Interesting stop those Fossil beds. They claim its the largest fossil deposit in the world. At one time this area was a rain forest. They have the largest petrified red wood trees. Fossils of other trees and leaves and insects now only found in Asia. Turn of the Century this was a tourist stop via train and it was largely looted and pilfered of fossils and petrified wood.

Then we stopped at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. Cool but very touristy.

Day 16 260 miles Colorado Springs loop around Rocky Mnt N.P. to Denver

We decided the day before to ride up to Rocky Mnt N.P. and by chance I Checked the N.P. website which informed me that we needed a reservation to ENTER the park. What? Ya I guess certain busy parks are requiring entrance reservations for certain times just to drive around and look. We happened to get a reservation that would work for us. So we packed up and rolled north.

Castle rock I think
https://photos.app.goo.gl/hMzmn2p27XL9qb3A7
Once we got around Denver and on Hwy 119 towards Blackhawk, there was road construction. They had ground the road down 4 inches or more and left swirly grooves in the pavement. It was the scariest 5 miles of motorcycling I've ever done. A couple 2 up on a can am spyder 3 wheel thing seemed unaffected however. Once we got out of the grooved pavement the scenery was nice.

We made it to the entrance of the park about 4o minutes early, for the reservation time. We thought no biggie by the time we make it to the entrance gate with the traffic we will be good. Well by the time we made it to the check in ranger he told us "You are 20 minutes early, you need to pull over and wait" "What?" I responded He rolled his eyes and responded "Yes that what the reservations are for, but you are on a motorcycle so go ahead" I didn't hesitate clutch out. So dumb. I guess that would explain the line of cars parked. Motorcycle again for the win!

The ride east to west around the park took about 3 hours with picture stops. It was a rice ride and the bike ran great over the pass @ 12183 feet. Once out of the park we stopped for lunch

The road hwy 40 I think has some excellent switchbacks. It was great motorcycle road.
Then back down to Denver for a room for the night. We had tickets for a baseball game the next day.
wishing I was riding around the world
