I just got in a set of carbs from a '97 that I'll be putting on my '86. While initially messing around with them I notice this broken, threaded boss sticking out from carb #2. What is this?
I am thinking that it may have something to do with the cruise control perhaps. Otherwise I haven't a clue. My '86 carbs don't have that thing sticking out, I don't think.
Is this something that I may have to find a suitable bolt and a good dose of Locktite to use to seal it?
Is this significant?

Bad news Chris;
I went and checked a set of carbs I have and the boss you speak of and show in the photo is the threaded boss where the outer throttle cables stop bracket, part #11045-1312 bolts on. This bracket was modified for the 1987 and later models with cruise control, updated part # 39137-1058 and it holds the cruise control switch but uses the same internally threaded boss.
Hopefully there is enough thread to hold the bracket on otherwise you will need a #2 carb body regardless of which year outer cable stop bracket you will be using.

So, that being said, this boss, even in its' damaged state, should be irrelevant. My bike does not have any cruise control cable to go to the bracket anyway.
So, I would think that I can just ignore the thing and press on.
Or is this necessary for my existing regular throttle cables? If THAT is the case, then it's going to be several weeks before I'll have the time to find out if this thing has enough threads left to still do that job.

I understand it is not any joy to be told something one doesn't want to hear but it IS the case for the boss you showed regardless of the model year and whether or not cruise control is installed.
Any piece of machinery/ancillary control operated with a cable MUST have a stop/grip/bracket for the outer cable sheathing to be held at a fixed location in order for the inner cable to function as designed.
The information is yours to do with as you wish.

My confusion was in reading that the cruise control somehow was associated with the boss. Now I know that this is necessary for normal throttle cable operation, screw the cruise control aspect.
