92 voyager, has anyone found an aftermarket replacement ignition coil?

Good morning folks, I noticed on my new Me 1992 voyager that I had a slight stumble to it, I started checking the plug wires in the resistors and the plug conditions and found out that number three was not firing properly. I remove the coil and the coil wires and noticed that there was oil on the end of the number three coil wire where it went into the ignition coil. I suspect the coil is going bad and that is my issue, has anyone found an aftermarket coil that works for these bikes. Any would be wonderful. I have ordered a used one off of eBay but would love to have a brand new one while I have the bike torn apart

Good morning! I seem to recall a thread a while back on aftermarket coils. Check the tech section, perhaps dollar-for-dollar. I see you have an '82 550 LTD - I used to have one. First wife and I had many adventures on that little bike, roaming all around the Virginia and then Connecticut countrysides. Sold it, well, dang near gave it away for a car stereo, in the late '80s in Florida. In the mid-80s, guess it was '85 or '86, I had weekend duty on my Navy tug. Saturday morning when I left for work it was gorgeous, 80 degrees predicted, sunny skies (this was in April IIRC), so I rode the bike in to the base. Monday morning we got eight inches of snow. The snow stuck around all week, so Friday I drove the pickup in to work and to get the bike home I picked it up and put it into the back of the truck. By myself. That's probably part of the reason why my back is blown out now, y'think?

thanks for the reply, yeah the 550 is a blast on short runs, and yeah way too heavy for me to lift in a truck! I checked the Tech section, best I could, but didn't find any numbers to go with.

Oh yeah, and once I discovered I could do it, I did it a lot more. Bike needed new tires - lifted it up into the truck and dropped it off at the shop. Feel like showing off for the pretty lady across the way? Pick the bike up and put it into the truck.

I was CRAZY strong back then. Worked on a tug. We used this 9" line that three or four people would have trouble handling, I would throw it across the fantail and fake it out by myself, even when wet. Only about 18 pounds per foot.

I used to rewind electric motors. 400 pound motor, would lift it and carry it (slowly) across the shop. My boss was even stronger - one day another electrician and I, both big guys, had been moving an amplidyne (an old kind of DC generator used to excite larger AC generators) up from the engine room to our shop. A little less than 500 pounds, and we were whupped. We were taking a break before lifting it over the sill of the door into our shop - about a foot tall knee-knocker, I guess, and our boss, LTJG Bob Hampton, came by, pushed us out of the way, grabbed it, lifted it up to waist level, carried it into and across the shop and set it onto the workbench.

I more than once threw my back out lifting an empty coffee cup. Go figure.

Oh yeah. She got real friendly.

I used to have lots of back problems in my early 20s, then in my mid-20s when I worked on the tug the Navy put me on the "fat boy" program so I hit the weights and swam a LOT (bad knees kept me from having to run) and I got into really good shape (but because I have a skinny neck I never did get off the fat boy program despite being in such good shape). You see, they decided that the way to determine if somebody was fat was to measure the ratio between their neck and their waist. So the guys with triple chins weren't fat but the guys like me were. Government. Sheesh. So anyway, after a little weightlifting, the back never bothered me again while I was in the Navy, and not again until my mid 50s, almost 60.

Similarly, when I rode a bike 300 miles a week, my knees didn't bother me at all. Ten years of sitting on my butt and my knees started bothering me again.

I'm just glad I made it to Senior Citizen, complete with all the aches and pains. I'm one of those guys that when the time comes, I'm gonna be llke, "man, what a ride that was!"

Speaking of which, now that I've put a couple of hundred miles on Emily, I've decided she's not my cup of tea. Gotta get another VXII or maybe a Concours 1000.
