strong exhaust smell

Post by 4redjf »

Got a question about the strong exhaust smell when the bike is freshly started and idling for at least 5 minutes.
No smoke, choke not on. Starts very fast, idles fine, all fluids are fine. exhaust is quiet doesnt sound like holes in it.
Its outside in the carport but if it was inside a garage it would be too strong of a smell.
I've not had it or drove it enough to figure it out yet.
109k miles , maybe the exhaust??

Too much choke?
Pilot jets too rich?

wonder if i could run some carburetor cleaner in the fuel to clean the jets and carbs out.
It starts too good, runs smooth, idles fine.. so I'm hesitant to mess with the Carbs at this point.
I did notice that the rubber boot on the gear leakage is rubbing against the exhaust. But the smell isn't rubber burning.
Still doing more investigating.
Appreciate the input.

Check the free play of the moveable starter rail on # 4 carburetor. When the starter/choke lever is OFF there should be 1-3mm of free play in the cable, 3/64" - 1/8" for imperial measure.
Sometimes these are set too tight which can lead to an over rich mixture.
if it idles fine then the jets are not blocked.
Just a thought,
Dave

Is it possible you have a small fuel leak you are smelling,or a misfire that is exhausting unburned fuel? :hmm:

Jeff/original poster said it was an exhaust smell not a fuel smell. :hmm:
Maybe a bad exhaust gasket somewhere.

and after i was home and working on it again, the smell wasn't as strong.
