Torque setting on the alternator cush drive bolt?

Post by biguns »

Not certain it is called a flywheel but had a rattle and pulled the alternator and found the center 8 MM bolt loose I am think it needs locktite when installed but anyone know the torque setting or is it just tight enough tight? Thanks.

For the torque setting, it’s usually around 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft-lbs) for that size bolt.

On page 15-5 of the Motorcycle Service Manual the bolt which holds the alternator drive plate onto the alternator armature is shown as a "T2" in the list of "Specific" torque values. Note this bolt, part # 112G0616 is 6mm diameter having a head size of 10mm and is listed as an upset bolt.
Upon reading "T2" the values given for the alternator drive plate bolt are: 9.8 N-m (1.0 K-m, 87 in-lb).
On page 1-1 of the MSM General Fasteners torque values are shown and a 6mm non specific torque value bolt reads as: 5.9-7.8 N-m, 0.60-0.80 Kg-m, 52-69 in-lb.
I suspect that 15-22 ft.lbs would have detrimental effects on either the bolt threads, the armature threads or perhaps the bolt may even break off in the armature end. Perhaps the head size is being confused with the shank diameter in the previous post.
In the interest of clarity only,
Dave
