Really loud squealing noise

Good evening. I am very new to voyagers. I got a 99 1200 in a trade a few days ago that is pretty rough. I have been tinkering trying to get it running this evening and was successful in getting it to fire up. I ran it up and down the street 5 or 6 times and on my last trip I was headed towards the house in second gear and gave her about 3/4 throttle and got a pretty loud concerning squeal from somewhere in the drive train but not 100% where it came from because I didn't try to make it do it again as it worried me so I came straight home and parked it. Has anyone here had anything like this happen? Thanks in advance for any insight or experience on the issue.

Could be the fan squealing as it turns on and off, you might let it sit and idle till it engages and see.

have you had it up on the center stand ? spin the wheels, maybe something is binding. or if you think its in the engine, there is the water pump and alternator on the left side. Is it a high pitch squeel ? Was it at one frequency or did it change with the engine rpm ?

Ekap I have not had it on the center stand. Yes it was really high pitch. I rounded a hard 90 degree curve lined back out came up to about 30 in second and gave her about 3/4 throttle and she gave a pretty loud really high pitched squealing for about half a second and stopped. I let out of it and and eased back to the house and parked it

Brianmouton1987,did you ever find the cause of the squealing? That is puzzling
If it was a single carb engine,I would consider a partially plugged air filter,and a loose hose between the carb and air cleaner,when the throttle was opened the rush of vacuum would whistle through the loose hose.
But that would not be much of a consideration on a 4 carb/air hose engine.
Let us know what you find out.

The only thing I can think of that could possibly cause a squealing noise under acceleration is the clutch. Could just be the spider springs - a six dollar and fifteen minute fix. Correction - 12 dollar fix if you replace the clutch holding nut like you're supposed to. Need to either fabricate a clutch holding tool or use an impact wrench. Even replacing the entire clutch pack is a quick and easy job, just make sure to use locktite where the manual specifies to use locktite, and torque everything to specs.

OH make sure you use some kind of penetrating fluid or even soapy water on the clutch housing bolts before you remove them, as they are easy to snap off. Clutches don't often go on these bikes (Gertrude's was pretty much worn out after about 100k, half of which was in Philly traffic and every-block-stop-signs), but the spider springs do go fairly often.
