Center stand

Post by newrider1949 »

Looks like my 87 Voyager XII center stand is a one stage type as I find it impossible to get it to set. If anyone has a link to what the 2 stage one should look like I'd appreciate it - then I'd have an idea what to look for on Ebay or wherever ...

Thanks

It’s a double-jointed affair with two foot levers — although one is often rusted off. Get a good look at it. You can see it isn’t a simple one-piece unit. You can see where any second foot lever might’ve rusted off.
There are easy-find vids showing how to use the two-piece unit. Trying to use a two-piece pup (with the second lever rusted off) like a one-piece unit is most difficult.

No, but it's easy to tell whether it's one-piece or two (broken or not). Bound to be one or the other.

Pretty sure I have a one piece. Now, if I knew what a two piece looked like I'd be able to go buy one, right? No rust on my bike BTW

I'm pretty sure there is a video on YouTube about how to get a Voyager XII on the center stand. It was put up by Chris from Kansas (YouTube name is Igozumn) if memory serves me right there are a few different videos. Here is Chris' vid link.

Finally got the bike up on the center stand by putting a 2x4 behind the rear wheel and rolling it back on to it. This was before I got the air working to the rear shocks so maybe it'll be simpler now I have the shocks working again - maybe - it ain't easy with the stand the way it is for sure!

I took a couple of shots of the stand and it seems like there was another piece or place for something? There's a rubber grommet on a bracket under the arm that doesn't look like it does anything ...so maybe there's a piece missing from there? I guess not, that's probably part of the mount when it's up?

Looking at the pic in the link Dave posted seems like the other bit has broken or rusted off. If I had a pattern maybe I could weld a piece on -but not knowing the angle or the mechanics of it, that looks like a no go.

Per the various vids in Wedistan, this missing lever is really the first one you're supposed to mash down to get the stand's feet on the ground. The lever you have is for lifting the bike straight up onto the stand.

Yeah, it's a bitch to use as if it were a one-piece unit. And doing that, it's entirely possible to put the bike clear over the stand, so that the stand is folded forward. Then what are you gonna do? (I read about the clown who did that. Somewhere.)

I bought a new stand; the one posted above on eBay. Soon I will have more into this bike than the bike is worth ..mostly spent on shipping LOL

Anyway, all in. I'll get the bike working in all aspects.

Thank you for posting this!! I I just got me a 1990 Voyager and could not figure out for all that's holy how to get that damn thing on the stand without help. I kept pushing on the 2nd pedal and damn near blew a nut trying. Going to try it the right way tomorrow! Maybe it will actually work, :hmm:

Also make sure your tires are properly inflated!
Low tires will add the height required to lift, but full make it much easier (and safe to ride)!

And rear suspension properly aired up, if it's still the stock suspension.
