Engine oil type and quantity
Hi everyone, I realise that this question has probably been asked a lot but here goes, I am carrying out some routine servicing on my bike as I have no idea when anything was last done and I have managed to get an oil filter what type of oil should I be using please? semi synthetic? and how much in litre's would I need? Your advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Engine oil type and quantity
118 US fluid ounces, 3.489 liters, when filter is changed also. Don't forget there are 2 drain plugs.
I use Shell Rotella 15/40 NON synthetic, but I'm sure any quality oil as per the manual's recommendations would work.
Watch out for oils containing friction reducers as they may cause clutch issues some have said.
You will probably get many theories on which is the best oil. Use your own good judgement.

Re: Engine oil type and quantity
Hi Dave, thank you very much for your help with the quantities and type, I have read a few posts om the forum, unfortunately Rotella is very hard to get in the UK but I'm sure that I will find a suitable alternative, cheers

Re: Engine oil type and quantity
Friction reducers may also be called friction modifiers on some cans. 3 quarts 22 oz. of a good non-foaming motor oil at filter change. Rotella T 15w 40 is a really good cheap oil to use. It should be labeled Diesel oil but don't let that scare you. The Voyager XII loves it.

Re: Engine oil type and quantity
I concur with Mr Jensee. I have switched to Rotella 15W40 Diesel oil and Fram Tough Guard oil filter and my bike is loving it.
I change mine every 3k miles and have had no issues. I figure with how cheap the oil is (between $14/gal (on sale at Auto Zone a lot) to $18/gal, I can change it more often.
Speaking of changing oil, how often does everyone here change their oil in their bikes?

Re: Engine oil type and quantity
I change my oil at 4000 miles on the VXII,but when I do it looks almost as clear as when I put it in The Cushman not so much I changed it the last time at 300 miles and it looked a heavy thick black.Draxxis wrote:I concur with Mr Jensee. Re: Engine oil type and quantity
Add me to the list of Rotella T users. Changed over and the bike loves it. I change every 3000 miles or before any longer trips.

Re: Engine oil type and quantity
Agree, Rotella for me also. I change mine once a season as I only do about 3000mi a year because of our short 6 month riding season with the exception of last year where I did about 5500mi because of my trip down through CO.

Re: Engine oil type and quantity
Just my two cents worth, but I have used Shell Rotel T 15W-40 for 20+years. I have used it in everything from big diesel equipment down to small engines. I have never had an oil related problem of any kind.

118 US fluid ounces, 3.489 liters or 3.06 quarts (UK)
Since Shell Rotella is a median priced diesel oil I would think finding a median priced 15W40 diesel oil in the UK should work well.
