OK so I have finally gotten around to tearing my 93 XII down to go through and fix issues that the bike has had since i bought her years ago. As for this topic, I took off the clutch cover today to look as i have been having slipping issues for some time. First thing i noticed was a piece of the leaf spring was laying behind the outer plate. When looking it does not show available. So first question, (I have sent an email to Carl but have not received a message back yet) does anyone know if its possible to use a leaf spring from a later model 1200? When looking on bike bandit using a buddies 01, it looks like there is 2 that are installed now? So i am not sure what i need to use to replace.

Second item in regards to the clutch-friction plates. The service limit says the should be between 2.9-3.1mm in thickness. Mine look worn with very little oil grove left in them. When I measure the tangs that sit in the edge of the basket, they are 2.96mm and when measuring the thickness at the grooved section it measures 3.1mm. Now my issue is if these were brakes i would say there is not much pad left to them and i need to replace, but going by the measurements its where it needs to be? So prior to me placing another order for additional parts(going through everything, motor is now out of the bike), do the friction disks have that little material on them or am I not measuring right?

Previous bikes I have replaced clutches on were thicker than what I have here. Thanks for any input. :please:

Never received that private message, I did get a reply from carl on the appropriate leaf spring to use. Anyone want to chime in on measuring thickness of the friction disks?

Might want to call Carl for a good explanation but as I understand it, it's not so much the thickness of each disk but the thickness of the total stack. That makes it very difficult to determine the individual plate thickness. I had shifting problems at the time and was in the transmission already so I used the whole clutch basket assy off a spare engine I have. It was an older engine with out the leaf springs. Per Carl I thought that was wiser than changing the stack height with individual disks. As a point of interest, my clutch was not bad. I believe I remember Carl saying clutch disks rarely go bad. I changed mine to eliminate the springs. ........Gator Mike

I am going to have to order a new set of friction disks, can anyone tell me how many friction plates and steel plates area supposed to be in the clutch? I am wanting to verify that i am ordering the right amount. When checking the book it does not state how many are in there. Currently i have 9 friction disks and 8 steel plates. The piece of the leaf spring appreas to have gotten wedged at doing point and started scraping off the material on the friction disks.

Really think it would be wise to speak with Carl before ordering anything. He has forgotten more than we will collectively know. At any rate good luck with your project.

You may want to check your clutch springs to see if the length is still in spec. I had a slipping clutch on my 94 years ago. It turned out that the friction plates were still well in spec but the springs were bad. I replaced them with heavier Barnet springs I got from Carl.
