Engine Removal

Post by Jeff Gordon »

Just curious if anyone has done a motor swap? I have followed the manual but am a little confused if I need to remove the swing arm as well, or will the shaft come with the engine when I start pulling it out? Any help would appreciated!

No Jeff, just undo the band clamp of the rubber boot from the front bevel gear housing and expose the end of the drive shaft. Rotate the shaft until you see a small hole into the drive shaft side. There is where you push in with a small punch/finish nail to release the dowel pin that holds the drive shaft onto the bevel gear. While pressing on the dowel pin, work the shaft off of the gear BUT BE WARNED: that dowel pin will spring out of position and go flying into some recess of obscurity if you are not aware that it is going to do that.
At reassembly time simply press the dowel in against it's spring and slide the drive shaft onto the gear over the pin. The dowel pin locks the shaft in place so check and MAKE SURE the dowel is actually doing it's intended job before moving the rubber boot back into position.
See page 8; Section 10 of the Service Manual for the pin illustration.
